  Notes for BESSIE GLADYS CONKLIN:
FROM THE FERGUSON FAMILY REUNION, AUG. 1, 1997

Bessie Gladys Conklin was born in Stockville, Nebraska, on December 11, 1902. She was the third child and first daughter of William James Conklin III and Matilda Jane Underhill. The family consisted of five boys and two girls. The oldest boy died when he was very young, a few months after Gladys was born. In order of their ages they were: Sanford, Loyal, Gladys, William J. IV (Bill), Adrian, Edorthy (Eda), and Leslie.

Gladys lived on a farm with her family in Nebraska until she was six or seven when they moved to Scenic, South Dakota, in a covered wagon. Grandma Conklin wanted to take her stove and furniture and in those days they didn't have moving vans. Along the way they set up the stove and made a fire in it on the plains and she would cook and bake bread. It took several weeks to get to Scenic.

The family lived in South Dakota for a while and then moved to North Dakota for a short time and then moved back to Scenic. Gladys graduated from high school there. After high school, she went to Normal School in Spearfish, SD, and taught school for a few years. The Conklin famly moved to Midwest, Wyoming, to work in the oil fields.

In the meantime, Dave went to Midwest also to find work. Gladys and Dave met one day at the water storage place. Dave drove the school bus and he asked Gladys if she wanted a ride to get out of the rain. They went together about three years while Gladys was teaching at Teckla, WY. They were married on October 2, 1925, at Casper, WY. They moved to Hilight - - 40 miles south of Gillette, into Dave's homestead house. Here they had three children--Mary, Ruth and David.

When David was a baby, Dave got sick and had to go to the Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver. He was there for quite a while. Gladys, Grandma Ferguson and the baby went to see him there.

When Dave got home, he couldn't do very much work so they decided to move to Montana to be close to Gladys' parents by St. Xavier. They had their own little house. Mary went to school in Crow Agency with Eda and Leslie. During this time in Montana, Florence was born.

Soon after, they moved back to Hilight to the house they had lived in before. Three years later in 1936, Martha was born in October. Dave could not make it on the farm in Hilight so they decided to move to Sheridan. In the Spring of 1937, they packed up everything on the truck and moved with Eda and her baby, LeRoy. Dad drove and Gladys sat in the front with the two babies (Martha and LeRoy) and the rest of the family sat in the back with Eda and the Furniture.

The night they arrived in Sheridan, they stayed in the Log Cabin Motel on Main Street. They stayed there for a few days until they found another place to live. They lived in two more places in town and then moved to DutchCreek and farmed for a few years. Jackie was born when they lived there. They moved back to town and lived in about two other houses before moving to 11th and Parker about 1945.
