Washington.He married MATILDA (TILLIE) JANE UNDERHILL December 25, 1897 in Near Holdrege,Frontier Co., Nebraska, daughter of JAMES UNDERHILL and ROSANNA SEYBOLD.She was born January 28, 1879 in Holdredge, Franklin, Nebraska, and died November 12, 1939 in Salmon,Lemhi Co.,Idaho.

Chunky Conklin, in 1887, traveled Westward with his parents from
Jackson County in Iowa to a farm near Gayville in South Dakota.
In 1888, they moved into Frontier County in Nebraska near
Stockville.However his parents returned to Gayville in 1894.
Chunky Conklinand Tillie farmed near Stockville until 1907
when they moved to a farm near Scenic in South Dakota.After
five years in Scenic, the family moved toGarrison in North
Dakota in 1912.However they returned to Scenic in 1915.In
1923, they left Scenic for Salt Creek in Wyoming.After 3 years
at Salt Creek, one year was spent at Yakima Washington.In
1927, they moved to Hardin in Montana.After eight years, in
Hardin, they moved to Salmon, Idaho in 1935.Here is where they
enjoyed the rest of their natural lives.

Graveside Service Here Thursday Afternoon
Graveside services will be held aat the Salmon cemetery Thursday afternon, January 18, at 2 o'clock, for the late William J. Conklin.Mr. Conklin passed away in Spokane on January 12 and l funeral services were held in that city.Rev. Don Ian Smith, pastor of the federated church of Salmon will conduct the graveside service.Arrangements are under the direction of Ray McGoldrick.
Mr. Conklin had been a resident of Lemhi county for the last ten years and is well known in this community.He is survived by four sons.Loyal Conklin of Leadore; William of Tendoy, Adrian of Spokane and Leslie of Baker, Idaho; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Ferguson of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mrs. Dorothy Barrett of Spokane; four brothers, F.J. Conklin of Evans, Colorado;R.T. Conklin of Keystone, S.D.; F.J. and M.C. Conklin, both of Garrison, N.D.; three sisters, Mrs. E.J. McElwain of Mullan, Idaho; Mrs. Mary Colby of Berkely, Calif.; Mrs. Marie Miller of Garrison, N.D.

FUNERAL SERVICES-MRS. W.J. CONKLIN
Were Held at Doebler Funeral Home This Afternoon
Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Doebler Funeral Home for Mrs. William James Conklin, who passed away Sunday, November 12 at the age of sixty years.Services were conducted by Miss Eva Brown, Methodist minister and interment was made in the Salmon cemetery.
Matilda Jane Conklin was born January 28, 1879 in Franklin county, Nebraska.She and her husband and family came here about four years ago from Handen, Montana and located on a ranch on Haines creek.
She is survived by her husband William James conklin and six children, Loyal, Adrian, Leslie, who live on the ranch here; William of Harden, Montana; Mrs. Gladys Ferguson of Sheridan, Wyoming; Mrs. Edorthy Barrett, also of Sheridan.

Notes for BESSIE GLADYS CONKLIN: FROM THE FERGUSON FAMILY REUNION, AUG. 1, 1997 Bessie Gladys Conklin was born in Stockville, Nebraska, on December 11, 1902.She was the third child and first daughter of William James Conklin III and Matilda Jane Underhill.The family consisted of five boys and two girls.The oldest boy died when he was very young, a few months after Gladys was born.In order of their ages they were:Sanford, Loyal, Gladys, William J. IV (Bill), Adrian, Edorthy (Eda), and Leslie. Gladys lived on a farm with her family in Nebraska until she was six or seven when they moved to Scenic, South Dakota, in a covered wagon.Grandma Conklin wanted to take her stove and furniture and in those days they didn't have moving vans.Along the way they set up the stove and made a fire in it on the plains and she would cook and bake bread.It took several weeks to get to Scenic. The family lived in South Dakota for a while and then moved to North Dakota for a short time and then moved back to Scenic.Gladysgraduated from high school there.After high school, she went to Normal School in Spearfish, SD, and taught school for a few years.The Conklin famly moved to Midwest, Wyoming, to work in the oil fields. In the meantime, Dave went to Midwest also to find work.Gladys and Dave met one day at the water storage place.Dave drove the school bus and he asked Gladys if she wanted a ride to get out of the rain.They went together about three years while Gladys was teaching at Teckla, WY.They were married on October 2, 1925, at Casper, WY.They moved to Hilight - - 40 miles south of Gillette, into Dave's homestead house.Here they had three children--Mary, Ruth and David. When David was a baby, Dave got sick and had to go to the Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver.He was there for quite a while.Gladys, Grandma Ferguson and the baby went to see him there. When Dave got home, he couldn't do very much work so they decided to move to Montana to be close toGladys' parents by St. Xavier.They had their own little house.Mary went to school in Crow Agency with Eda and Leslie.During this time in Montana, Florence was born. Soon after, they moved back to Hilight to the house they had lived in before.Three years later in 1936, Martha was born in October.Dave could not make it on the farm in Hilight so they decided to move to Sheridan.In the Spring of 1937, they packed up everything on the truck and moved with Eda and her baby, LeRoy.Dad drove and Gladys sat in the front with the two babies (Martha and LeRoy) and the rest of the family sat in the back with Eda and the Furniture. The night they arrived in Sheridan, they stayed in the Log Cabin Motel on Main Street.They stayed there for a few days until they found another place to live.They lived in two more places in town and then moved to DutchCreek and farmed for a few years.Jackie was born when they lived there.They moved back to town and lived in about two other houses before moving to 11th and Parker about 1945. |

FERGUSON FAMILY Dave was born in Stanhope, Iowa, on Nov. 10, 1893.He was the third child and first son of Michael Francis Ferguson and Martha ( Elzira) Ferguson .He had two sisters who were older, Evelyn and Feriba, and a younger brother, William Lyle. Dave was in the first World War.He stayed in the USA and did not go overseas to Germany like Bill did.He as a cook in the Army in Washington state.He had trouble with his hearing so he got out of the Army early. |
