John enlisted in the New York Light Infantry Militia Volunteers on or about September 14, 1813. He was discharged on November 14, 1814 with reason given as: Sickness at Sackett's Harbor. From 1853 to 1855, and from 1871 to 1879, his widow Sarah Tuttle McIntyre lived in Madison, Indiana. John drowned at the mouth of the Cumberland River, off Smithson's Island, in Kentucky. His widow applied for and was granted bounty in 1855. According to his widow, John was 32 years of age when he enlisted in the NY Militia, and born in Scotland.

State of Indiana, County of Jefferson, On this 14th Day of May, A.D., One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy Nine....
Sarah T. McIntyre, aged 82 years, a resident of Jefferson Co., in the State of Indiana, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is a widow of John McIntyre, deceased who was the identical person who served under the name of John McIntyre as a Sergeant in the company commanded by Captain Archibald McIntyre and Major McArthur in the regiment of New York Infantry Militia Volunteers, commanded by Major McArthur in the War of 1812; that her said husband enlisted at Johnstown ....and whose services terminated by reason of "sickness At Sackett's Harbor". She further states that the following is a full description of her said husband at the time of his enlistment, viz: He was about 32 years old and worked on a farm at the time of his enlistment. He was born in Scotland. He was about 6'6" in height with black hair, black eyes and fair complected. She further states that she was married to the said John McIntyre at the city or town of Johnstown in the county of Montgomery in the State of New York on the 8th Day of November, 1815 by Simon Hosuch, who was a Minister of the Gospel. Her name before her said marriage was Sarah or Sally Tuttle, and that she has not remarried since the death of the said soldier, and she further states that herself nor her husband had not been previously married and that her said husband, John McIntyre, died at the mouth of the Cumberland River of Kentucky on the 23rd Day of May, 1835; and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of his discharge from the army, viz: Johnstown, NY, Madison, IN.
Sarah made her mark ( X ) in front of E. Kennedy, Attestor and dated May 14, 1879 in a form to correct errors made in the original application for land bounty, which Sarah received about the year 1856.
