Notes for J
OHN MCKENZIE, SR.:
John lived at Ft. Blackmore, Va. and belonged to the Old Stoney Creek Baptist Church.

The 1820/30 Scott Co., Va. census shows eight children, six boys and two girls. Some records names Ellen boggs as wife of John. He could have been married twice. Death certificate of son Oliver gives parents as John and Patsy McKenzie. Various spelling of the family name such as McKinsey, McKenzey, and Kinsey are found in the records of Scott Co., Va. census and minutes of the Church. The family members who came to Kentucky was spelled McKenzie which is the name used in this report.

From a presentation given at the dedication of a Civil War Marker for John McKenzie's grandson Lemuel G. McKenzie: "John McKenzie came to Scott County, Virginia at age five in 1785. John married Martha "Patsy" Cox and possibly Ellen Boggs with at least 8 children most of which migrated to eastern Kentucky."

From the "East Kentuckian" March 1987: "Excerpt from material submitted by Charles B. Coke, 18327 Sharon Road, Triangle, Va. 22172. Mr. Coke indicates in his material that most of the data on this family was submitted to him by Mr. Don Lemaster, Portsmouth, Ohio. (Both Mr. Coke and Mr. Lemaster are deceased as of year 2000).
"John McKenzie, b. 1780-85 (based on 1820 & 1830 censuses), d. in 1837 or after, m. ca 1800 Martha "Patsy" Cocke/Cox, b. 1777-84, d. ca 1840-50, dau of David C. and Jemima (Leach) Cocke/Cox. This family lived at Fort Blackamore, Scott Co., Va. Both were members of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church, Scott Co., Va. Various spellings of this family name, such as McKinsey, McKinsy, McKenzey, and Kinsey are found in the records of this locale. However, the name of the family as used by the family members who came to Kentucky was McKenzie, this surname is adopted for this article." See information for each of their children in the notes under their names.

Received from Albert Conley: "Possibly born 1780 to 1785, based on 1820 and 1830 census. Died about 1837 as his name does not appear after 1837d. His name is spelled McKinsey, McKinsy, McKenizey in various accounts. John married Martha "Patsy" Cocke/Cox about 1800. John's age is given as 26-45 in the 1820 census and age 40-50 in the 1830 census. Around 1787-1792 came from Scotland. The History of Scott County, Va.,
C. C. Addington, Clerk, mentions the members of Stoney Creek Baptist Church prior to the time (year) of 1819. On this list appears John McKenzie (McKinsey) and Pattie Kinsey (McKenzie). Other entries in the church minute book of Stoney Creek Baptist Church, that concerns the McKenzies are: "February the 22, 1818 church met in love and David Cox, John Buster, James Brickey, John McKinsey, David Cox, Jr. and others are welcome." On January 23, 1819 names "Sister Patty Kinsey to be on a committe to investigate a complaint of a member of the church."

The History of Scott County, Va. (Page 265) further references the Stony Creek Baptist Church. The earlist legible date is August 26, 1815, but the church was organized in 1801. This date is shown in biographical sketches of two of its first members, William Brickey, Sr. and David L. Cocke. These sketches are found in the Minute Book of the Stony Creek Regular Baptist Association. According to this record William Brickey, Sr. was born in Botetourt County, Va. december 29, 1779 and became a member of this church at its organization in 1801. He married Elizabeth Cox, a daughter of David Cox. David L. Cocke, another of its first members, was born at Castle's Woods, Russell County, June 12, 1785.

Fort Blakmore in Scott County, Va. was home to John and Martha "Patsy" McKenzie. Today Ft. Blackmore is located on State Route 65 in the western part of Virginia and is in the vicinity of Big Stone Gap near the border of Kentucky and Tennessee.

e-mail from edagg@vwcom.com states that Ellen was a twin to William - born Wilkes Co., N. C., born 1782.

Loretta Johnson, P. O. Box 787, Bolivar, Missouri 65613 - e-mail cwjlj@ipa.net states that Martha married John McKinney or McKenney.

From Albert Conley: Martha "Patsy" Cocke/Cox, probably the fourth child of David C. and Jemima Leach was born between 1777-1784. The 1820 census of Scott Co., Va. gives her age as 26-45. 1830 census shows her age as 40-50. She does not appear in any census after 1840 and probably died somewhere between 1840 and 1850. Dates estimated through analysis of census and tax records. Believed to be buried at Stoney Creek Baptist Church, Ft. Blackmore, Va. The 1830 census shows six sons and two daughters.

From RobertLC@concentric.net (Robert Cunningham): "I contacted my source in Denver. She agrees that it is possible, if unsubstantiated, that John McKenzie was married first to Ellen Boggs and that Burgess McKenzie, the oldest son of John, was the son of Ellen Boggs. She indicated that there is confusion about who Burgess's mother was but there is some degree of certainty that John was married to both Ellen Boggs and Martha Cocke/Cox."

Received from Albert Conley (alconley@erols.com): Conversations and notes taken with Ola (Conley) McKenzie and Clora (Williams) McKenzie (married to Albert McKenzie) in June 1963, indicated other children in the family tree. albert McKenzie had mentioned to Clora that his great grandfather John McKenzie was married twice. His first wife Elinor (Ellen) had died early and that he had another son born somewhere around 1800. He just said, "That he had another boy in the house, and that the boy then married, moved away, and was seen around from time to time." No other factual information was available.
