Descendants of John & Martha (Simpson) Gaylor

      3. Sarah Matilda4 Gaylor (John3, John2, James1) was born 08 Jan 1847 in Jackson Co TN, and died 02 Aug 1888 in Muskogee, IndTerr. She married (1) Elbert Jordan(1) 20 Apr 1865 in Fannin Co TX. She married (2) Ivera Wright(2) 04 May 1868 in Barry Co MO. She married (3) Frederick McDonald Uhls 16 Aug 1871 in FtGibson(CherNation)IndTerr. He was born Abt. 1825 in TN, and died 13 Dec 1893 in Ind Terr.

Notes for Sarah Matilda Gaylor:
SARAH MATILDA GAYLOR was born in 1847, probably near Granville, Jackson County, TN but as a child moved with her parents to Marion Co TN near the AL/GA border. They settled on the Washburn Prairie in southwestern Barry County, MO around 1853. It is believed her father John Gaylor died soon after the move since her mother Martha married William Brummett in Barry County in 1854. The family moved to Ladonia, Fannin County, TX around 1858. In 1865, when Sarah was 18 years old, she married Elbert Jordan in Fannin County, but this marriage didn't last and they were divorced or it was annulled. Mr Jordan married another woman soon after. In 1867 in Farmersville, Collin County, TX, after Sarah's step-father William Brummett died, her mother married William C. McCord. They moved briefly back to Barry County, MO where Sarah married Ivera B. Wright in 1868. About 1869, Sarah traveled to Ft Gibson of the Cherokee Nation with her mother and brothers "Jack" & "Tom" Gaylor. It is known for sure what became of her brother Abslom Gaylor, whether he died in TX or traveled with the family to MO and Indian Territory.. They probably all traveled as a group. Her half-brother Robert Brummett came with them and step-brother John Brummett also made the move a few years later. Sarah's husband Ivera Wright probably died in Indian Territory since Sarah married a blacksmith named Frederick McDonald Uhls in 1871 while at Ft Gibson. They later moved to Muskogee. Sarah & Frederick had several children, Cynthia, Florence, Emma W., Pearl, Mittie, George and Fred. It is possible Sarah had other children from her previous marriages, however, this is not known for sure. Sarah died in Muskogee in 1888 and is buried in Greenhill Cemetery. Her husband Frederick married Mrs Mary Jane Griffith who helped raise the children, but he also died in 1893.

(Don's note: According to the custodian of this cemetery, it was established in the early 1900's. The Uhls family plots, among many others, were moved from the old cemetery which was located across the street from the Old Baptist Hospital on Fondulac Street. The "reconstructed records" made at Greenhill, many years later, are therefore, very sketchy & inaccurate concerning some of these relocated graves. Dozens of these old graves were unmarked or the stones had no names. Specific information was probably remembered incorrectly by surviving family members. Two of the graves in the Uhls Lot 22 had no names. The records incorrectly stated that Sarah M. Uhls died in 1887. The actual stone is engraved as stated above, with a death date of 1888. Another stone in the Uhls plot did indeed have a death date of 1887, age 41, however, no name was engraved. This was probably a relative, perhaps a child from Frederick's first marriage to Catherine Love. It is possible that Frederick, who died in 1893, is buried in this Lot with no stone. Frederick's 3d wife, Mrs Mary Jane Griffith, who he married in Peru, Kansas 1890, is evidently not buried here.)

1890's - Case #310 (Final decision of the APPEAL made concerning the DAWES Commission adverse decision//(evidently made by Sarah's children after her death. She died in 1888)
SARAH M. UHLS vs No. 310 Cherokee Nation
Mr N.A. Gibson, Special Master to whom this case was referred, submits the following report: (Insert Report)
BY THE COURT. This case in on appeal from the United States Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes. The Indians contend that they are Cherokee Indians by blood, and that their parents were legally enrolled as citizens of the Cherokee Nation, and that their names were stricken from the rolls without process of law. The Master, however, finds that the proof is insufficent to sustain the allegation of the claimants, that they or any of their ancestors have ever been enrolled as ciitizens of the Cherokee Nation, there being no positive proof made in the statement of their petition. He further finds that there is no proof of the Indian blood of the claimants.
In view of these facts the judgment of the United States Commission rejecting this case is affirmed, and the application of the claimants to be enrolled as citizens of the Cherokee Nation is denied. Entered Dawes No 5497

Note: Virginia Norcross, a descendant of Sarah Matilda Uhls' son Frederick Jr, also researched Sarah's citizenship case & sent me the following email. The original applications concerning this case supposedly are in the custody of the BIA Area Office in Muskogee, OK. She briefly viewed some of the papers but did not make copies:
- - - - - -
"I've scanned the front page of the citizenship case #42, and the answer I
received from the Dept. of the Interior. I also scanned a copy of a notice
of appeal from the decision of the Dawes Commission. It noted the existence
of Prima Facie evidence concerning their citizenship in the Cherokee Nation.
The evidence was sent to the authorities as required by law, but was "lost."
So was the particular box that contained the earlier Dawes cards. The Nation
told me that someone had spilled coffee on several of the boxes. The Gaylors
were named in the case, but the rest of the case is packed away."
- - - - - -"There was a very strong family tradition in our line, that Sarah was of Indian ancestry. The story was that her brothers and children were unable to establish their rights to the land (a choice piece at the edge of a national park, as I understand it) after Sarah's passing."
