Notes for John Thomas "Tom" Gaylor:
JOHN THOMAS "TOM" GAYLOR was born in Marion County, TN near the Alabama/Georgia border in 1851 but as a small child moved with his parents to Washburn Prairie in SW Barry County, MO. It is believed that his father John died soon after the move, since his mother Martha married William Brummett in that county in 1854. About 1858, the family moved to Ladonia, Fannin County, TX. After his step-father William Brummett died, Tom's mother married William C. McCord in 1867 in Farmersville, Collin County, TX. They settled briefly back in Barry County, MO but about 1869 traveled to Indian Territory and settled near Ft Gibson of the Cherokee Nation. Those who made the move (probably as a group) were Tom's mother as well as brother "Jack" Gaylor & and sister Sarah Matilda. It is not known for sure what became of brother Abslom, if he died in TX/MO or made the trip to Indian Territory. Half-brother Bob Brummett also came with them and step-brother John Brummett arrived a few years later.
During the 1870's, Tom married his first wife Martha. It is possible that Martha was his step-sister, daughter of William & Nancy (Ray) Brummett. They had a daughter named Josephine who died in 1887. After wife Martha died in 1880, Tom married a woman of Cherokee ancestry, Nancy Elizabeth Alberty, the widow of Trusle Bird Harris. Tom & Nancy had several children named Lavena, Thomas J., David H., Grover C., and Perry A. Tom & family had settled in an area of the Cherokee Nation on the Grand River northeast of Wagoner, later called Gaylor Bend. This was Cherokee allotment land that is believed to have belonged to wife Nancy's family.
Tom's sister Sarah Matilda who married Frederick M. Uhls eventually moved from Fort Gibson to Muskogee. Tom's brother "Jack" left the Cherokee Nation during the 1870's, settling briefly in Arkansas, then the gold fields of California & and eventually Wyoming where he raised his family. Tom was a cattle rancher in the Gaylor Bend area for many years and also served as a scout from time to time for the cattle drives coming through the area.
There were also 4 Gaylor siblings residing with relatives in the Cherokee Nation , Samuel & Laura, born 1860's & twins Lillie & Tillie born 1872. It is believed they resided with Tom's sister Sarah Matilda Uhls and their grandmother Martha McCord at Fort Gibson, but eventually resided with Tom Gaylor at Gaylor Bend. It is not known for sure who they belonged to, either Tom or his brother Jack, brother Abslom, sister Sarah Matilda or step-sister Martha Brummett. They used the Gaylor name which was either their actual name or adopted name. Records are scare for white people in Cherokee Nation, i.e. 1870/1880 census, therefore, their parentage can not be determined at this time.
Tom's mother Martha is believed to have later resided with him at Gaylor Bend & died on the place in 1887. Another of Tom & Nancy's daughters, Abbie, died in infancy in 1898. Nancy died that same year. Tom's half-brother Bob Brummett eventually settled in nearby Hulbert.
In 1900 Tom was involved in a "gunfight" in Wagoner with a town marshal who died of his gunshot wounds. There was some bad blood between them since this other man had once assaulted Tom's brother-in-law. Tom was convicted of murder, however, the court transcripts of the appeal suggested extenuating circumstances and it is believed Tom would have been exonerated. Tom died of pneumonia at the District Jail in Muskogee in the winter of 1902 before the appeals process could be completed. During the previous year, 1901, Tom had married his 3d wife, Nancy Foreman who gave birth to a daughter named Elizabeth, born about a month before her father's death.
Tom Gaylor was buried beside his 2d wife Nancy in the Gaylor Bend Cemetery. This cemetery was later relocated to the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery near Wagoner, OK during the construction of Fort Gibson
