Notes for Grace Lenore McKinney: Grace Lenore McKinney was born 23 Mar 1915 in Lander, Fremont County, Wyoming, the daughter of Earl & Amelia "Dottie" (Farthing) McKinney who were pioneer cattle ranchers in the area. Lenore married Bert Hambrick 7 Oct 1934, the son of Corner & Jeanette (Rickner) Hambrick, natives of Oklahoma who settled in Fremont County when Bert was a child. Lenore and Bert worked on several ranches and later leased the Floyd Scott place on Dry Lake near lower Willow Creek. This is the same place her parents leased during the 1930's. During the 1940's, Lenore, Bert & their young daughter Barbara moved to Missoula, Montana, where their 2 sons, Donald & Steve, were born. Bert was employed with a monument company making tombstones but later moved the family to Hamilton, Montana where he died 30 April 1970. Lenore later owned and operated a restaurant in Hamilton. Lenore died 2 Sep 1975 and was buried next to her husband in Stevensville, Montana. |

Notes for Edward Farthing McKinney: Edward Farthing McKinney was born 18 Jun 1917 in Lander, Fremont County, Wyoming. His parents, Earl & Amelia "Dottie" (Farthing) McKinney were pioneer cattle ranchers in Fremont County. Both his paternal and maternal grandparents came to Fremont County during the 1880's. He grew up on his parents' various ranches and also gained ranchhand experience on other local ranches during his youth. He married Hilda Iiams 22 Dec 1938, the daughter of James Elmer & Beulah Faye (Pope) Iiams who were also pioneer settlers of Fremont County. When Ed's parents purchased a cattle ranch on Twin Creek near Derby Dome during the 1940's, Ed & Hilda went into partnership & eventually took over the ownership upon the deaths of Ed's parents during the 1970's. Ed & Hilda raised their 3 children, Marilynn, Tim and Kelley on this ranch. Ed was also employed as a heavy equipment operator and continued to reside on the ranch with his family until his death 24 Apr 1989. He was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery near his parents. Wife Hilda passed away in Nov 2001 and was buried next to her husband. Their son Tim, former Fremont County Sheriff, and his wife Rosie are the present owners of the ranch. |

Notes for Donald Earl McKinney, Sr: DONALD EARL McKINNEY was born in 1920 and was raised on various cattle ranches near Lander, Fremont County, Wyoming. His parents Earl & Amelia (Farthing) McKinney & grandparents were pioneer horse & cattle ranchers in that area of Wyoming. Besides his father's ranch, he worked on several other ranches in that area as a cowboy & horse breaker. During World War II, the Army began actively recruiting cowboys & horsemen for assignment to horse cavalry units. Donald joined up in October of 1941 and was stationed at the Cavalry Replacement Center at Fort Riley, Kansas. He soon rose to the rank of First Sergeant at the age of 22. He met & married his wife Eda Faye Thomasson in 1943, who was also serving at Fort Riley in the WAACS. The next year, he served a combat tour in Burma. After the war, Donald was discharged from the army and worked in the oil fields near Vernal, Utah. His wife and young son, Donald Jr were with him. He soon quit the oil fields and re-enlisted in the army as an infantryman & was again stationed at Fort Riley. During the Korean War, he received a battlefield commission as a 2d Lieutenant and became a career army officer. He & his family were later stationed at Ft Leonard Wood, MO, Ladd AF Base, Alaska, Ft Knox, KY and Ft Chaffee, Ark. Donald retired from the Army as a Captain in 1962 and moved to Junction City, Kansas, when he was hired as General Manager of the Fort Riley Credit Union. He held this position for 25 years until his death 7 July 1988. Notes for Eda Faye Thomasson: EDA FAYE "TOMMIE" THOMASSON was born and raised in Magazine, Logan County, Arkansas. Her parents, Gordon & Hester (Jones) Thomasson lived in that area of Arkansas for many years where Gordon was a rural mail carrier and later postmaster at Magazine. Eda Faye's paternal grandfather was an educator and Superintendant of Logan County schools. He also served terms as County Judge and State Representative. Her maternal grandfather was a physician & surgeon who practiced in Little Rock for many years. Eda Faye was a nurse's aide at the State Sanitorium, Booneville, Ark after graduation from high school. In 1943, she joined the WAACS and was stationed at the Whitside Clinic, Ft Riley, Kansas. She earned her nickname "Tommie" while in the WAACS. She met cavalryman Donald E. McKinney at Ft Riley that same year. After they married, she was discharged from the WAACS & her husband soon went off to combat in Burma during World War II. While her husband was in Burma, Eda Faye & infant son Donald Jr lived in Magazine with her parents. After the war, she and their 2 sons, Donald Jr & Richard, travelled with her husband on his various assignments as a career army officer. After her husband's retirement from the Army in 1962, they moved to Junction City, Kansas where they lived for many years. Soon after her husband died in 1988, Eda Faye moved to Topeka, Kansas, to be near her sons.
