Jonathan Worthington Born abt. 1737 Byberry, Philadelphia, PA. Died: on September 1, 1801 New Britain Twp., Bucks, PA The primary purpose of this research was to identify the first wife of Jonathan Worthington, who up until now has only been known as “A”. Jonathan built a house in 1768 in New Britain Township that is known as The Old Worthington House. This house still stands at Center & Mercer Streets in Doylestown, PA. There was a date stone near the house with the initials of of the builder, that of his first wife and the date of erection J. A. W. 1768 Research associated with this endeavor has provided more insight into the life of Jonathan Worthington, revealed some inaccuracies in previously recorded family histories and expanded our knowledge of Jonathan’s extended family. Name: Jonathan Worthington Born: about 1737 in Byberry, Philadelphia, PA Father’s Name: Samuel Worthington born abt. 1692 in Lancashire, England Mother’s Name: Mary Carver born about 1696 in Byberry, Philadelphia, PA. Married 27 April, 1724 at Abington Meeting Religion: Quaker Occupation: Weaver and Yeoman. Residence: New Britain, PA, now Doylestown, PA. The 46 acre property was purchased by Jonathan on 20 April, 1761. The 2.5 story fieldstone house was erected on the property in 1768. Refer to attached pictures. The property was sold by Jonathan’s estate upon his death. 1st wife now known to be Ann Willson, born abt. 1735 in Southampton, PA. Ann died 8 May, 1775. Widow of Daniel Knight (b. 8 July, 1732 m. 24 Dec. 1754, d. abt. 1757 Marriage: reported married March of 1760 In Buckingham Meeting Minutes. Children: Benjamin Worthington David Worthington Israel Worthington James Worthington b. possibly 1759 Jonathan Worthington b. 31 Dec. 1766 Phebe Worthington b. 1762 Buckingham 2nd wife Charity Fell, born 20 Dec 1748 in Buckingham, PA, died about 1781. Married: October 15, 1777 at Buckingham Meeting Children: None as far as we know. 3rd wife Mary Naylor Childs Married: 13 Feb. 1783 at Plumstead Meeting Children: Zenas Worthington b. 12 Dec 1783 Cephas Worthington b. 19 Jul 1786 Jane Worthington b. 27 Oct 1787 Macre Worthington b. 23 Oct 1789 William Worthington b. 08 Jul 1792 Died: 1 Sep. 1801 New Britain Twp. PA. As a Quaker, Jonathan and his first wife would have made their intentions to marry known to the meeting he attended. In the mid 1700’s the Quakers of Pennsylvania were becoming the minority population. For this reason the Society of Friends raised the standards/doctrines of everyday life. This included the inability to marry the widow of a first cousin. Jonathan and “A” were warned not to marry and therefore their intentions and her name were never recorded in the Buckingham Monthly Minutes.
