Marriage Notes
The following extract regarding the admission of the McKean boys is from the Barnardo Home records: Full agreement with Canada clause assigned by sister [of Mrs McKean] Mrs Mary Ann Gilmore. These orphan boys have been admitted on application of Miss E. Purvis, lady superintendent of the nursing Association, Middleborough, who filled out a question from supplying the following information: Father, McKean,[sic] was foreman at the Middleborough gaswork and died two years ago from the result of an accident. The relatives are mostly decent, hard working people who have a good reputation in the town, but none of them are very well off. We are not told how the mother maintained herself after her husband's death. She became broken down in health and for some months was under the care of the district nurse, her suffering at times being very severe. It is said that a more patient or gentle woman a nurse never had. It had been her great wish that the boys be sent to Dr Barnardo and when the promise was given, she said "I am glad, now I can die happy. My poor boys will be cared for." Her death took place on October 18, 1899. The relatives were all anxious that the boys should be admitted and propose sending annually a small sum to the Home towards their support. The boys are certified to be in excellent health. They have had to measles .

Notes
Dr. Barnardo was at the ship to bid us farewell when my brother David and I sailed for Canada in 1905. David was nine and I was eleven. I remember that we were in the back of the ship, probably third class. The voyage lasted between two to three weeks. We were stopped for at least one day by icebergs. On our arrival in Canada we went by train to Winnipeg and spent about two weeks together in the home. There we were told we would be separated. I remember we crawled into bed together that last night and cried with our arms around each other until we went to sleep. I was sent to a farmer near Miniota, Manitoba. One day about three years later my boss took me to a country fair. I was wandering around and I saw this boy who looked familiar. I walked up to him and said "I think you're my brother." When my boss came to say it was time to go home, I said "I've found my brother." So he gave us two bits and told us to go and buy something with it. We bought some bananas and sat on the railway ties and talked and talked. My brother lived at Beulah, a village about nine miles north from my place. My brother David was awarded a medal from the Barnardo home for 'Good Conduct and Lenght of Service.' I did not receive one. I was moved from my first farm, although I did not tell my home representative of my plight. The hired man wrote someone about it --- probably to the home --- and I was moved to another place where I stayed until my brother and I went overseas in 1914. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alex was with Mr. and Mrs. Nick Robinson until he joined the army in 1914. He served in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Alex was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. He assumed leadership of his company when their officer was wounded. Alex came back to Miniota after the war, working around the district until his marriage to Mary Beard on October 9, 1929. We lived on the home farm until Alex joined the Veterans Guards in 1941. We lived in town until he returned home. Alex did railway work until he was disabled by an accident. He was bridge watchman until his retirement in 1958. Since that time he has had a little greenhouse in Miniota. Mary McKean, 1967

Marriage Notes
A highlight in our life was the trip on the Empress of Canada in the autumn of 1966. We went to France after visiting with relatives in England. For Alex an outstanding highlight was a trip to Spain. I was very pleased to be able to babysit while Alex, Bob and Sharron went to a bull fight. But, time has brought changes to our family. We lost our dear husband and father May 28, 1975. Alex was in his 82nd year. I, Mary, still reside in our home in Miniota. As for our four boys; Charles and family still reside at Dauphin, Manitoba where they have a Texaco, twenty-four hour service, filling station. Wilbur and family now reside at McCreary, Manitoba. Reinald and family are still at Bentley, Alberta. Robert (Bob) and wife Sharon have made a little history since 1966. While still stationed in Lahr, West-Germany, daughter Lynda Was Born, 1967. Then in March, 1972, a son Mark, "a little Canadian" was born at Edmonton, Alberta, were Bob is stationed. At present Bob is stationed at Trenton, Ontario. There are now eleven grandchildren. I also lost my sister Margaret (Beard) Scott in February, 1975 but I am happy to record that my sister Kathleen Lees of Burnaby, B.C. has just celebrated her 87th birthday. Mary, Alberta, McKean (Beard) 1976
