The following information was provided by Helen Sherman. It was written by Isaiah Davis McKee, grandson of Robert McKee and Mary Cree McKee, in 1914.
A brief History of the Original
MacKee Family of Scotland
My grandmother (on father’s side of the parentage) gave me the following information in reference to her place of birth, also that of my grandfather. My grandfather (Robert McKee) and my grandmother (Mary Cree) were of Scotch Irish decent. My grandmother was a first cousin of James Hamilton, son of the Laird of Grange Cambuskeith, in Scotland.James Hamilton emigrated to the West Indies, some time in 1700 and located on the Isle of Nevis. He married a lady of French birth, Miss Mary Llytton, and they had one son who was named Alexander Hamilton.Soon after the birth of Alexander, the mother died.Alexander’s father married a second wife and Alexander was placed in care of Mr. Peter Llytton, a brother of Alexander’s mother. At an early age Alexander was employed in a store of Nicholas Cruger, where he studied such books as he could borrow, among them the brief history of America. He was bright but had no taste for a commercial life.Mr. Peter Llytton, who was then living on the Isle of St. Christopher, sent Alexander and another boy to America, to be educated.
My grandfather married my grandmother in Edinboro, and they soon emigrated to America. There were two of his brothers come over at the same time. One settled in the South, on in the West and my grandparents settled first in Clearfield Co., PA, and soon after moved to McKeesport, PA and Pittsburgh, PA.The letter “a” was dropped from the name about this time.Robert & Mary McKee had three sons and four daughters. The names of the sons were John, Thomas & William. My father’s name was John.My grandfather and grandmother both died in Pittsburgh, PA.My grandfather, first at eighty and my grandmother, at ninety one years.

“The Crest”
“Clan MacKee” was organized between the years 1642 and 1702, in Scotland, and at the time of the revolt against King Charles. Our crest dates back to that time.
My grandfather, Robert MacKee, did not value the Crest and never used it to any extent during his life and none of his children placed any value to it.
An impression of the Crest was recently found in the back of an old book which has been in the family over one hundred years.I have had it carefully traced and a sketch made by good artist and have had a steel DIE made to conform to the original for the use of my children.
1800 Census:One of 2 males listed in his father's household age 26 - 45.

(N.B.Another version of the above information states that Robert and Mary McKee had four sons:
John, Thomas, Robert and William.

Another scrap if written information from Isaiah D. McKee states:
“In reference to the part of Scotland Robert McKee came from, I cannot tell. The original family, I believe, lived near Edinboro, and the family (?)...... Scotland as the years passed. Some of them moved into the .... of Ireland. My Grandmother spent about a year with us when we lived on a farm in Westmoreland Co., PA and she was a dear old lady. She had a beautiful Scotch dialect.I was a lad of 13 or 14 years and I took great interest in the history of the old family and Scotland, but you know that was about 67 years ago, and only some things she told me made a lasting impression upon my mind. She was over 90 when she died.
I think the Clan McKee was organized at the time when William Prince of Orange fought against the Roman Catholic attempt to regain power over England and Scotland. You may have access to the history of that war. Now, what I write you is from memory and it may not be absolutely correct, but it is the best I know from memory. .....

James Hegarty was murdered on Robert McKee's land.It was never proved who did it.
Robert McKee made little improvement of the land.Don't know what became of him.
In 1836 John Miles, Sr., came to the township and purchased 200 acres including the McKee property.
Someone made a note that Robert McKee died in Pittsburgh at age 80.

Notes for Mary Cree:
See notes under her husband Robert that were written by their grandson Isaiah Davis McKee.Isaiah claimed that both Robert and Mary were born in Scotland, and the Robert was from near Edinburgh, and that they were married in Edinburgh.According to people who have research the Cree line extensively it is possible that Mary's father John was born in either Scotland or Ireland, but it is extremely unlikely that Mary was.She was probably born in America.
Isaiah Davis McKee also claimed that his grandmother's (Mary Cree's) family was connected to the Hamiltons of Ayrshire (south of Glasgow).
In the 1850 census she is listed as born in PA.In the 1860 census her son Robert lists both his parents as foreign born.In the 1870 census he lists both parents as born in Ireland.
Someone made a note that she died at age 91.
