| I am following four family lines. Maria, Joseph Sr. and Paul Sr. were siblings. They were the only three of the six siblings that came to America. Maria, born in 1881 and the eldest sibling, was a mail-order bride for Joseph Hosmanek in 1904. She was the first to arrive in the states. Next came her brother, Joseph Sr., born in 1887. Joseph came in 1906 and was married to Josephine Plevak. Joseph is third in birth order of the six children. In 1907, Paul Sr. , born in 1895 and the "baby" of the family, came to the states for a brief stay. He came again in 1914 permanently. He was single when he arrived and eventually married Maria Prska. I have learned that Prska was an alias used and the family surname was Sieklik. The surname was originally spelled Vranik, but Joseph and Paul changed it to Wranik when they applied for citizenship in Wisconsin. It is assumed this was done to "Americanize" it and spell it phonetically, since "V" is pronounced similar to a "W" in Slovak. There is another Vranik family that kept the original spelling. Ferdinand Vranik. He was from the same village in the "old country," immigrated during the same time frame and settled in the same vicinity as our Vranik family. However, I have not been able to connect the family line.....yet. All of these Vranik's were from a small farming community (they were farmers) in what was originally known as Lissza, Hungary, part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire or Dual Monarchy. Today it is known as Lysa' pod Makytou, Slovakia. We are all of Slovak nationality - different than Czechoslovakian, but the language is similar. I have traced both of these Vranik family lines back to the 1700's. But right now, it is only a bunch of names and dates. I need your help and participation to create our true Family Story, giving "personality" and validation to our ancestors. Please pass on any anecdotes or memories you may have on any of the family members. There are so few of us left to leave our footprint in the hearts, heritage and minds of the future generations. Thank you, Denise We also have a private family website, available by invitation and password. Please contact me to share info. |
