Richard BISHOP was born in 1612 in , , , England. He died in Piscataway, Middlesex, NJ. When Richard was about 16, he signed on as a soldier with John Endicott who sailed on the Abigail from Weymouth, England to Salem, Massachusetts in 1628. He was a first settler in Duxbury but was living in Plymouth in 1628 when he hired himself out to Love Brewster (son of Elder William Brewster) for a small salalry and 20 bushel of Indian corn. In 1640, he hired Nathaniel Souther to work for him. He was also listed in 1643 on a list of males 16-60 who were able to bear arms. Richard married Alice Martin Clark, widow of George Clark. It is thought she was the daughter of Christopher Martin and Marie Prower
who came on the Mayflower. This has not been proved, however. Alice first married George Clark. He died leaving her with two young daughters. Alice married Richard Bishop in 1644. Tragedy struck the young family on July 22, 1648. For reasons unknown to anyone, Alice killed four year old Martha Clark. An inquiry into the death of little Martha was requested by Gov. William Bradford. Rachel Ramsdem testified that she had entered the Bishop house on an errand. Alice Bishop asked her to fetch some buttermilk and gave her a kettle. Before leaving the dwelling, however, she saw the child asleep on her bed. Alice appeared ina normal state of mind. When she returned, however, Alice was distraught and upon investigation, she found the body of the young girl, who had been killed with a sharp knife. At the time Alice did not seem to comprehend she had committed the act. At a Court held on 4 Oct 1648, before Gov. Bradford, Miles Standish and others, Alice confessed she had murdered her child and was sorry for it. She was found guilty by the Court and sentenced to be the first person hanged in the Colony. Richard Bishop not only had a problem of two small girls to raise, the notoriety of his wife being a murderer of her own child, but he seemed to have his own problem of stealing other peoples belongings. In 1649, he was found guilty of stealing a neighbors spade. In 1670 he helped himself to some fleece taken from the sheep of George Crisp. Soon after this incident he sold his property and moved to NJ to live with his only daughter Damaris
and William Sutton.
