Robert W. McLaughlin first shows up in St. Joseph Co. On July 1, 1835 being married to Lucinda Shaw. In 1850 the family again appears in the US Census in Penn Township, St. Joseph Co., Indiana. Robert W. McLaughlin and Lucinda Shaw had the following children listed on the census:
Andrew Jackson McLaughlin
Charles Francis McLaughlin
Thomas Benton McLaughlin
The family reappears in Lee Co., Iowa in the 1856 special census. At this point Lucinda Shaw is remarried to David I. Coon and has been living in Iowa for 2 years. Also Laura Jane McLaughlin appears on the census and she is shown to have been born in Iowa. We know from family records and from a Manuscript written by Lewis Coon in 1890 that Lucinda Shaw McLaughlin was a widow when she married David I. Coon.
David I. Coon and Lucinda Shaw McLaughlin and the rest of the family show up next in Mercer Co. Missouri in the 1860 census.
My goals are as follows:
Fill in accurate information regarding the birth, death and marriage records for the descendents of Robert W. McLaughlin and Lucinda Shaw.
Find conclusive evidence regarding the parents of Lucinda Shaw. Some have claimed that she was the daughter of Benjamin Shaw and Sally Strong, however to my knowledge this is based on speculation and not based on bible records, census records, obituaries or other family records.
Find the birthplace of Robert W. McLaughlin, ancestors and siblings. The 1850 census is the first and only record of the birthplace of Robert W. McLaughlin. It is difficult to read the birthplace and differentiate the state and it is possible the state is Virginia, Vermont or another place. The marriage record for Robert W. McLaughlin and Lucinda Shaw states the birthplace as Vt., however, the record is not an original and was compiled using the census records. A request has been submitted to the National Archives to review the original for interpretation.
Find the whereabouts of Robert McLaughlin and Lucinda Shaw's oldest son Allen McLaughlin who according to family records married Ellen Noble and had two children John McLaughlin and Jean McLaughlin who married a Wright. Allen could be anywhere from St. Joseph Co. IN and Lee Co. Iowa. He was not with his mother when she shows up in the 1856 Lee Co. IA census.
I am also interested in Coon / Gohn Descendents that originate in York PA because I am a direct descendent of John E. Coon and Elizabeth Ewing and because my family is heavily married into the Coon family starting with Lucinda Shaw marrying David I. Coon.
Surnames include McLaughlin, Shaw, Coon, Covey, Flowers, Anderson, Barton, Beverage, Blakesly, Boatman, Burkeybile, Clapham, Cooper, Dean, Delong, Depuy,Goldsby,Renick, Martin and Many others.
