The following information was taken from a book Molly and I came upon in the
summer of 1993. The History of Licking county,Ohio published in 1881,by A.A.
Graham listed the following families as the early settlers of Licking
county. Who were William Shannon coming from Franklin county,Pa.,Jesse Oldaker
who came from the Shenandoah Valley,and Ebenezer Brown who came from Washington
County,Pa.,these men came to the county in 1813 and settled in Mary Ann
township
They were later followed by Homeward Mariott,William Mitchell,Aron Brown,Robert
McLaughlin,James Starrett,Rev. James Cunningham,James Porter,Charles
McFadden,Elisha McFadden,James W. Colville,Jordan Hall, David Moats and W.
Henthorn.How soon these men followed William Shannon,Jesse Oldaker,Ebenezer
Brown was not given . I speculate they have come fairly soon after,because
of the marriage of John McLaughlin and Elizabeth Shannon occured in January of
1817 in Licking county,Ohio. I suspect that John McLaughlin is the son of
Robert McLaughlin,and that Elizabeth Shannon is the daughter of William.
Elizabeth (nee Shannon) McLaughlin according to the 1850 census was born in
Pennsylvania.
In the 1820 U.S. census showed all the above names as living in Mary Ann
township,Licking county,Ohio, with the exception of Robert McLaughlin,James
Colville,Jordan Hall,David Moats.
The following is the 1820 census Mary Ann township listing John McLaughlin as
head of household: one male being age 18-26 years of age,living in the same
house is a male age 45 and over. 1 female being 16-26 years of age,2 females
being under 10 years of age.
I have searched the census of 1820 in Licking county and have found no Robert
McLaughlin. I believe the older male living with John & Elizabeth McLaughlin is
Robert McLaughlin.
The following information came from the Licking County,Ohio Courthouse
Court of Common Pleas,Dated Monday 6 April 1835
Be it known on this day personally appeared in open court
John Armstrong age twenty-eight,Robert McLaughlin age sixty-four,John Bell of
the age of Twenty-two. Who were all born in Ireland,and claim subjects of
King of Great Britain and Ireland. Who bring swore as the law requires
severally state and declare that it is Bona fide intention to become
citizens of the United States and to renounce forever all allegiance
to any foreign primer,potentate state or sovereignly whatsoever and especially
that of the King Of Great Britain and Ireland of whom they are now respectivety
subjects and it is ordered by this court that the said John Armstrong,Rob
McLaughlin and John Bell do severally receive certificates of this entry under
the Seal of this Court.
