We have many cousins who are eager to help us find our family. Can you help us? We are trying to find proof that Henry Self who married Elizabeth(Betsy)Allen in Roane County, Tennessee on March 31, 1807 are the parents of William Nathan and Allen R. Self. Henry was born possibly in North Carolina. Elizabeth was born in (?). If you have any information that will help us please contact: Peggy at pm9347@charter.net

We are sure that there maybe mistakes in our information, so if you can help us to make corrections, please contact us. We would love to hear from you. We will be glad to share information and pictures. We do love those pictures. Some of the surnames we are looking for are: Self, Speegle, Tucker, Aaron, Wood, Tedder, Holloway, Lauderdale, Sinyard, Harbison, Guthery, Guthrie,Gibson, Compton and Williams. There are many, many more and we will be listing them soon.
Cousin Bob Self has spent many hours looking for proof that Henry and Elizabeth were the parents of our Allen R. Self. He has written what he thinks about our family during the early 1800's and I want to share it in hope's that someone will read it and reconize this theory and help us in our search?
Hennry Self and Betsey (Elizabeth, Betsy) Allen were married in, then, Roane County, Tennessee on March 31, 1807. One of the bondsmen was Levi Self, who we believe was Henry's older brother.
The children of Henry and Betsy Allen Self were:
William Nathan Self, born February 8, 1808 in Tennessee, probably Roane/Bledsoe County.
Salley Self, born November 21, 1809, possibly in Tennessee, if not, then in Barren/ Cumberland County, Kentucky.
Jessey (Jesse) Self, born August 17, 1811, in Barren County, Kentucky.
Allen R. Self, born October 12, 1813, in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.
Hannah Self, born January 16, 1816, possibly in Bledsoe County, but it is also possible that she was born elsewhere.
The Self and Allen families are related to another Bledsoe County family of that era, the family of William Billingsley and Thomas Billingsley, brothers. When Henry Self and family were in Barren County, Kentucky during the period 1810-1812, so were William Billingsley and Thomas Billingsley and their families. And, when Henry and Betsey and their children returned to Bledsoe County around 1812-1813, Thomas Billingsley and his family did so as well. It is possible that William Billingsley also returned to Bledsoe County for a short while.
Thomas Billingsley was married to Nancy Courtney Allen, who, we speculate, was a sister of Henry Self's wife, Betsey Allen.
Henry and Betsey and their youngest child, Hannah seem to disappear from records after Hannah's birth.
But, sometime in the period 1815-1819, the four older Self Children appear in Blount County, Alabama, under the guardianship of William Billingsley. Parenthetically, we know that Thomas Billingsley, who had acquired land in Bledsoe County, sold it in 1815, to an Andrew Allen, possibly a brother of Betsey and/or Nancy Courtney Allen. Thomas and his family joined William Billingsley and his family in Blount County, Alabama. Thomas's oldest daughter, Nancy, married in Blount County in 1819.
It is possible that Henry, Betsey and Hannah met their demise in Bledsoe County. We have not been able to find evidence confirming this. This question is the focus of our search.

    Amy was born to John Austin Tucker and Amy Harris Tucker. She married Chesley on November 9, 1884 in Cullman County, Alabama. They had ten children.
  • Lou Cinda Gipson, wife of Henry R S Self (85 KB)
    She was born abt 1863 in Alabama and died 1938 in Arkansas.
  • Rev. William Fleming Bates & Mary Jane Tucker (85 KB)
    Mary Jane "Dora" Tucker is Amy Sarah Frances's sister, who married William Fleming Bates, the son of Thomas Royal Bates and Sarah Ann Martin.
  • Minnie Mae Self Aaron (35 KB)
    Minnie was the daughter of Chesley and Amy Tucker Self. She was born, May 5, 1895 and married Dillard Franklin Aaron, August 21, 1912. They had five children. She died June 5, 1988 in Kennett, Dunklin County, Missouri.

    This is Chesley Sylvanus Self with two of his son's from his first marriage to Amy Tucker Self.

    This is Dennis Self's parents. James Steven was known as "Stevie". He was the son of William Allen Self and Lena Mae Omega Brown Self. James died May 2, 1991 and is buried in Valley Springs Cemetery, Cullman, Alabama. Ezma died April 30, 1991 and is buried beside her husband in Valley Springs Cemetery, Cullman, Alabama.
