The Early Bible Record of the Hornsby & Stroud Families

Presentation By Rex McLaurin

Revised 19 July 2003

The following transcription is from what was originally known as the “Hornsby Family Bible”.  Noting the date of publication (1756) of the Bible it is probable it first belonged to Leonard Hornsby (1699-1779).  At some point the Bible was probably passed on to Leonard’s son, John Hornsby (1753-1840).  In other transcriptions it is stated that down the side of one of the pages of this Bible is written- "This Bible is John Hornsby's Bible, may he have the Grace to read it."  Upon examination of the Bible, John B. Windham was not able to locate this entry.  It is also possible the Bible could have been passed around between John Hornsby’s siblings.  We do know from the transcription that Leonard’s son Leonard Hornsby (1755-abt.1830) made entries in the Bible in the 1780-1782 time period.  Whether he possessed the Bible at this time or just happened to be the one selected to make entries we do not know.

Apparently this “Hornsby Family Bible” was brought into the Stroud Family when John’s daughter, Nancy Hornsby (1799-1846), married Joseph H. Stroud.  After being passed down and remaining in the possession of several generations of the Stroud family, it eventually became to known as the “Stroud Family Bible”.  At some point it was handed down to Claude B. Jordan of Bascomville, Chester Co., SC.  It was while in the private ownership of C. B. Jordan that this old Bible became to be more widely known.  It is my understanding that C. B. Jordan guarded this old Bible very strictly and carefully during his lifetime.  It is said, he would allow people to look at it and allow note-taking but would somewhat limit the time allowed to examine the Bible, nor would he allow the Bible to be photocopied.  It appears the Bible then went to Marcus Neal Jordan, and then on to Henry G. Jordan. Henry G. Jordan states in the letter below that he had received by inheritance the Bible from his first cousin, Marcus Neal Jordan.  Henry G. Jordan gave the Bible to the Chester District Genealogical Society of Richburg, Chester Co., SC.  It was George Harvey Moore of the Chester District Genealogical Society, not Henry G. Jordan, who gave the Bible to Winthrop University where it is now archived.

The following letter was "hand copied" on a blank notebook paper by John B. Windham.  It was not in the Bible and the original was obtained (from which he copied) from the archivist at Winthrop University in response to the question to her..."When did Winthrop University obtain the Hornsby Bible?".  The archivist went into her office and apparently pulled this original letter from her administrative files.

Dear Mr. Moore,

Recently I received by inheritance the “Stroud Family

Bible” from my first cousin, Marcus Neal Jordan.

I understand the Bible and related documents

with it contain substantial family history of

the Stroud family. I would like to donate the

Bible and these papers to the Society so they

may be proper preserved and available for

future generations. I do not wish to receive

any publicity for this gift but do hope it will

benefit others.

Yours very truly,

Signed

Henry G. Jordan

The above Stroud Bible and related documents received

by George Harvey Moore, on behalf of  Chester District

Genealogical Society, this the 29th day of February 2000

Signed George Harvey Moore

The Bible only stayed at the Chester District Genealogical Society for a very short time (probably less than a year).  For probable reasons of better control and better storage facilities, the Bible was relinquished by the Chester District Genealogical Society and donated to Dacus Library at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, York County, South Carolina.  The archivist at Dacus told John B. Windham that they received the Bible sometime in 2000 but no document was seen to verify that date.  The Bible is currently located at:

It is very important to note the current condition of the Bible.  Today, many of the words/names have faded to the point that the words are to some degree unreadable.  Many of the pages are so old and brittle that the page borders with part of the words/names have actually "flaked-away" and are probably lost forever.  John B. Windham stated that even his own inspection of the Bible did damage.  Just the careful and slow turning of pages caused portions of the pages to flake away.  After his inspection flakes had to be actually raked off the table and carefully inspected to see if they contained any handwritten word.  The archive staffs at Winthrop University are very protective of the Bible.  Inspection was only allowed in a room with a member of the archive staff present.  It is a true blessing that photocopies of the Bible were taken or even allowed.  John B. Windham received the photocopies from the archivist, which were probably very carefully copied by a member of the archive staff.

All the following information was copied from the “Stroud Family Bible” and accompanying documents.  Transcriber’s notes are inserted in parenthesis and footnotes will be added to the bottom of individual pages.  Original Bible and documents photocopies were obtained by John B. Windham. A four hour physical inspection of the Bible was performed by John B. Windham. Inspection was conducted under a large magnifying glass and careful notes taken. The original photocopies were then scanned at a very high resolution by Rex McLaurin.  Over a seven month period, these scanned images were inspected using various techniques used to enhance the quality of the image in Adobe Photoshop 7.0 by Rex McLaurin.  During this period as well there were many correspondences between myself and John B. Windham to agree on and to verify each page of transcription. Experts in deciphering old handwriting were consulted in order to understand some of the notations by authors of certain entries.  We have taken the care and effort to create the most accurate transcription possible within our means.  We do not claim perfection but are very pleased with the resulting project.  This final transcription is presented by Rex McLaurin and John B. Windham.

NOTE: Page numbers correspond with photocopied pages number referenced for research purposes only. Page numbers do not correspond with actual page numbers in the Bible. Entries on several pages seem to be handwritten by different authors. Handwriting will be differentiated as noted by the transcribers notation, i.e. (hand A) (hand B). Handwriting notations are for single page interpretation only. It is not intended to indicate the handwriting from other pages is from the same hand.

Dear Mr. Jordan,

I have found a copy of  the Hornsby Bible records published in 1958 with your name listed as the owner. Since I know my fourth great grandfather, Moses Hornsby, served in the militia from S.C., I feel sure he is the one in your bible.

If you have any information on when the Hornsby’s came to America, I would love to get a copy, and if you are interested in what happened to the branch of the family that moved eventually to Texas in 1832 I’d be happy to

I realize this is a very long shot after all these years to find the owner with no more address than is listed here, but I am desperate enough for information to try anything.

Yours truly,

Hazel Mills

Note – The missing date for Leonard Roden when blown up appears to be a “1” with the incorrect notation of “th” (not the first time the wrong notation used). It could possibly be a “7” as some researchers have listed his birth date as 7 April 1765. John Windham believes it may be a “5”.
