1. THOMAS³ STANLEY (WILLIAM STANLEY² ?, JOHN¹ STANLEY) was born Bet. May 20 1768 - 1778 in "Old Erin",Ireland, and died Bet. 1821 - 1830 in Indian Creek , Ritchie Co,Va.(Cedar Grove Cemetery). He married CATHERINE CHEUVRONT May 28, 1800 in Harrison,Co.,Va., daughter of JOSEPH CHEUVRONT and ELIZABETH ELLSWORTH. She was born September 29, 1779 in Spotsylvania Co.,Fredericksburg,Va(Rockbridge Co. now), and died Aft. 1816 in Indian Creek , Ritchie Co.,Va.(Cedar Grove Cemetery).

Indian Creek stream took its name from the battle between the whites and the Indians at the cliff of rocks
on Indian Run, as shown in a picture in an earlier chp. of "History and Romance." It would be difficult to determine who was the first to penetrate its forests and build a cabin home; as we catch fleeting glimpses of several, who entered land here, but if they improved it, we have no evidence of it. So we must be content to begin with the first to leave traces behind them. This lies between John Ayers and Thomas Stanley, who were the first permanent settlers at least. Thomas Stanley seems to have secured title to his land before John Ayers did, even though tradition would give Ayers the first place.
However, the wood co.,records show that when John Ayers located his land here that he joined the "
Improvement of Thomas Stanley" who was aleady living on what later became known as the D.M.V. Philips Farm.

Thomas Stanley was one among Eli Watkins and John Ayers that settled on Indian Creek finding homes as early as 1810. Old Watkins we know nothing but that he was the son-in-law of Thomas Stanley and
the brother-in-law of John Ayers. Thomas Stanley made his settlement on the D.M.V. Philips' homestead adjoining Mr. Ayers. He was a native of "Old Erin", but came here (Wva.) from Harrison Co., Virginia as early as the beginning of the eighteenth century , verified by the marriage bond in 1800. Early manhood was when he emigrated to Virginia. He lived here until he was laid on the hillside, on his own plantation
not far from the former Cedar Grove Schoolhouse in 1850. Ref:" History of Ritchie Co", "History
and Romance" by Minnie Kendall Lowther. Thomas Stanley,Eli Watkins,John Ayres(Ayers) were the first pioneers on Indian Creek, having found homes near the mouth, as early as 1810; Watkins was the son-in-law of Thomas Stanley and the brother-in-law of John Ayres.

He was the father of John Stanley, who married Ellen Ayres, daughter of John Ayres, and resided on the old homestead until he, too, found a resting place upon the hillside; then his brother, James resided here until the Stanley's sold the plantation farm D.M.V. Philips late in the sixties or early in the
seventies. The other sons were: William, who was killed at Beverly on July 4,1863, while serving as a Union Soldier; Adam and Thomas, died in Wood Co., and Mrs. Margaret Taylor, and Mrs. Bridget Park(s), in Roane Co., and Mrs. Mary (Eli) Watkins , in this Co. These children have all passed on,
but among the grandchildren are, Joseph Stanley, Petroleum, the oldest living descendant; Daniel, William Stanley, Mrs. Phebe Lewis, and Mary Jenkins, of Mellin. John and Flavius Stanley, of Slab and Indian Creek, respectively, are great-grand sons. Cocoa, and Miss June Stanley are his great-great grand- daughters which among the young , perhaps, inherited their love for the profession of teaching from their distinguished grand-sire," John Ayres". The Stanleys were Indian fighters and were honest, industrious pioneers and it is not unlikely that they were Revolutionary Soldiers.

No listing in the1830-1840 Va. census index for a Thomas Stanley in Wood ,Lewis or Ritchie Counties. Unless he moved to one of the other 1830-1840 census counties, last name spelling changed or died earlier than 1830 . Ritchie Co.,Cemetery Book states he died in 1850, residence: Indian Creek, Wood Co.,Va. (now Ritchie Co., West, Va.) The Immigration to Va. from Ireland of Thomas Stanley would have been between 1768-1800 either with his parents or as a young man for he had married at the age 22-33 in Harrison Co.,Va. The resource for the marriage came from LDS , Ancestry .com and "Henckle " Genealogy, among other related Stanley researchers . The death of Thomas and Catherine (Cheuvront) Stanley is recorded in the Ritchie Co. Historical Society, " Ritchie Co., Cemeteries through 1993." According to other Genealogies they have Thomas being married at age 12. I don't think he got married that early in age because his first child was born in 1800 . They also say he was from Stanley's run in Lewis Co.,(as of 1950), Fredericksburg,(Rockbridge Co.) Va. If Thomas Stanley's father is William Stanley check notes on William for census index records at the beginning of this genealogy. I have not found facts to who Thomas Stanley's parents are. There should be a land record for Thomas Stanley in Wood Co., Va., to confirm his location and possibly age of death.

Notes for MARY STANLEY:
Found in the 1850 Ritchie Co., Va. (WV.) as Mary Watkins at age 45 by herself. There is a Mary Jane Stanley listed with Thomas/Catherine Stanley that married a Bumgardner in another genealogy ,but I don't recall our Mary be married twice unless she married after the 1850 census.

SARAH STANLEY?, b. February 28, 1810.

Notes for SARAH STANLEY?:
I'm not sure about Sarah. She seems to fit ,but no mention in the History of Rithcie Co.,Book.
Maybe she was overlooked somehow. She was listed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
