The McMONAGLE family are of proud Irish decent, hailing originally from Donegal Co, Ireland. Legend has it, that they were once a dominant family in their area. Although still a relatively small family, there are still many McMONAGLE decendants scattered throughout the United States and other countries.
Over the years, the McMONAGLE family name has had many changes. Original Irish spellings are thought to be: MACMAONGAIL, McMOANGAILL, and MACMAONGHAL ------ Common translation: maoin = wealth & gal = valor. Todays versions include: McMONIGLE, McMUNAGLE, McMONIGAL, MONAGLE, McMONEGAL, and others more abstract.
Often, names were spelled phonetically by clerks and census takers. Using this method, the spelling of many names became based upon dialect translation. Taking this into account, it becomes easy to see how many variant spelling came about. It is not uncommon to find the same person listed under 2 very differently spelled versions of the same name.
My primary McMONAGLE links and interests are in Centre Co, PA, and most of my research will be focused on that area, but I eventually hope to be able to include information on many different branches of the McMONAGLE family.
Currently, other associated surnames include: ADAMS, COWHER, FRANTZ, GOSS, HENDERSON, KELLEY, MERRYMAN, NEARHOOF, REESE, SHARER, and WOODRING.
Please visit my genealogy page (linked below). It contains much more detailed information on all of these persons, as well as pictures and links to other researchers and sites.
*Note* Please do not copy, publish, or reproduce in any way, any information found on my genealogy pages without my consent. I'm not stingy, but I want to ensure proper usage and credit of my "hard work".
