Col. Thomas Hamer was a cousin of Hugh Hamer. He was the son of James Hamer. He moved from Pennsylvania to Vermont, Illinois. He was a soldier in the Civil War and was later in politics. His son, also Thomas Ray Hamer, was later a U.S. Congressman from Idaho.
