Joseph Andrew Evans was a Spring Mill Park historian, employed by the State of Indiana. He married Lee Ann Smith, a descendant of Hugh Hamer. He was killed in a car accident just outside the entrance to Spring Mill State Park in 1989. He was devoted to the history of Spring Mill State Park and the Hamer Family. His wife, LeeAnn Smith Evans, a woodcarver borrowed stone carving tools to engrave Andy's tombstone so it would match her ancestors' stones. He played the bagpipe, as on the stone, and was a blacksmith and gunsmith.
