| About 1850 Wilhelm Pickhardt and his new wife Ernestine (nee Schwab) left Gummersbach on a journey that would eventually take them to the United States. After first emigrating to England,Ernestine and Wilhelm came to New York City, where they resided for 2 years. The family prospered to the point where they purchased 40 acres of land in Port Chester, NY on the banks of the Byram River. The amily settled in Greenwich, Connecticut and was joined by Wilhelm's siblings, August, Elenore (Amelie), Heinrich, and Christian. Willhelm and Ernestine had 10 children of which nine survived and grew up on the Port Chester (now Greenwich, CT) property. |
