I have a lot of info. on my mother's side (the Permenters), but almost starting from scratch on my father's side (the McMahans).

My father's family may have come from Co. Clare, Ireland and there were 3 brothers who served as indentured servants and fought in the Revolutionary War. So far, I have found his family mostly to be in Illinois (Quincy, Bowen, and Coatsburg) and above the deep south. My great grandmother, Mary Ann, or Mary Anna Chandler, is related to a Native American (I think maybe her mother was N.A.?) and she was born in Crestline, Kansas. Her uncle, who took care of her was Theodore.

Om my mother's side, the Permenters (or in French - the Parmentiers) are from France and said to be Hugenots. I don't know if my ancestor - John Permenter was Protestant or not (don't have any proof), but have been told by a few Permenters that it's true. John came here from England and settled in Isle of Wight, Virginia with his wife, Mary. He died in around 1715 in the same place. Mary died after 1718 as the 2nd wife of John Murray. The info. I have about John Permenter is found in a book called "Cavaliers & Pioneers" by Nell Nugent, pgs. 24-26, 178, 244, 388. So basically I'm just trying to fill in the blanks here. My great grandfather was Walter Newton Permenter, Sr. His father was Thomas Dixon Permenter. Thomas' father was James Thompson Permenter, and James' father was James Permenter III. Then there's James Jr. (James III's dad) and his dad, James, Sr. who was the son of John Permenter, my French ancestor.

If anyone wants to contact me please do! I can give you more information about me then and you can get a free e-mail account at www.yahoo.com. Let's send each other our own family trees and let's see where we can fill in the gaps. I want to at least share and keep information until I'm retired and then, with what I've kept, to finish as much as possible. I also got some awesome software to do this with and can keep things more up to date and not forget where I was before. Plus, I'm sticking to my father's and mother's paternal lines now. Then, I'll go back and do the maternal lines. Thanks!
