| Holbert, Holburt, Holbird, Halberd, Halbert, Haubert, Houbert, Howbert, Hobart, Hubert and I'm sure there's more. From the Cherokee Nation "Guion Miller Rolls" there is Holbert, Hulbert, Hurlbut, Halbert, Halburn and Herbert. Also, McNair, McNear, McNeir, McNairn, McNary and Mcenery. Hi there, I'm researching my HOLBERT family line through my mothers side of the family and McNAIR through my fathers side. If you can provide any further information, stories, photos, etc. please feel free to contact me via email, phone or postal service. Halbert/Halberd from Old German is a long pole with an axe-blade that has a built-in spear as part of the axe head and is used to control crowds or split helments. If you want to see a picture of a Halbert long pole spear copy the address below and paste it into your browser. http://www.public.usit.net/aqccorp/halbertspear.jpg Haubert/Hauberk/Haberg/Habergeon is a short sleeve coat of armor made up of interlocking metal rings to make it flexable. If you want to see a Hauberk coat of armor copy the address below and past it into your browser. http://www.public.usit.net/aqccorp/hauberk.jpg The Holbert's seem to have come from the Black Forest or Schwarzwald area of Southwestern Germany that borders on Switzerland on the south, on the Neckar River to the east and on France to the west. The northern gate to the Black Forest is Pforzheim. The Black Forest is named for the beautiful mountain landscape with its dense population of pine trees. It is a region of unspoiled nature with its forests, mountains and meadows. Maybe that is why the Holbert's lived in the Shenandoah Valley of VA and then in the mountains of Rutherford, NC. There is a Holbert's Cove in Saluda, NC and one in Rome, GA. There are also several Holbert Family Cemeteries. In many German cemeteries you will find it conforming with an old german custom, the burials are aligned with the foot of the graves facing toward true east. |
