William Jackson (Bud) Coats, the second child of Andrew Jackson and Sarah L. Vardeman Coats, was born March 16, 1872 in Nacogdoches County. He met Sarah Helen Scroggins, the daughter of James G. and Sarah Hannah Yancy Scroggins and they were married on December 15, 1892 at the age of 20. She was born in Nacogdoches County on Sept. 18, 1872 and died there March 27, 1927. They lived and raised their family in northern Nacogdoches County near the Holly Springs Community by the Telasfo Creek. Born to them were ten children: Frank (died before age ten); Henry (died before age ten); Hattie B. (11-26-1893, Mrs. Payton Russell); Oda (11-10-1898, Mrs. Gus R. Solomon); Earl Clifford (12-24-1902, Sallie Stewart); Kalon (7-3-1905, Eleanor Strong); John Edward (8-19-1907, Emma McConathy); Jim Allen (8-2-1910, Elsie Mae Self); Bob (3-10-1913, Pearl Schaeffer); and Virgil (Ted) (5-17-1915, Jean Button). We are told by his family that William Jackson was a very strong man as was his father before him. He was big and found that his strength to be very useful when he had to work with obstinate mules and horses. After a good hard lick between the ears, enven the most stubborn mule would gon on to work. He was a very strict father to his children, but typically, was a very soft, doting grandfather who loved to spoil his grandchildren. He always had a nickname for all the children around him and had a very dry sense of humor. He loved to tell stories and would always have several children and adults as well, around to hear his tales of days gone by. Sarah Helen was a tall, quietly gentle and deceptively soft spoken woman who ruled her household with a firm hand. Her main goal in life was to see that her family was taken care of. Their home was the meeting place in the community on Sunday afternoons. Sarah Helen always made sure that she had a table full of food "just in case" company came, and company always came. Sarah Helen took care of her mother until she died in 1926. Sarah Helen died march 27, 1927 at the age of 55 years, and William Jackson died November 21, 1936 at the age of 64 years. They are buried in the Bethel Cemetery at Appleby, Texas.
