Notes for Mary Jane Russell:
Mary Jane Russell was born to Gibson and Zenobia Crawford Russell on February 22, 1842 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. In a pamphlet written by John Weatherly in 1925, he says that the Bullocks, Crawfords, Russells and Weatherlys were among the first settlers of the little community of Appleby in Nacogdoches County. Here my grandmother, her children and most of her grandchildren were born. When she was of school age, she went to Henderson, Texas where she lived with her Uncle Colby Crawford and went to school. She married James Franklin Bullock at 15 years of age on May 14, 1857. The ceremony took place in front of the Russell home with the bride, the groom, and the minister all on horseback. The couple set housekeeping near Appleby.
Late one Spring evening, so the story goes, the young mother of four little girls dropped to her knees before starting her evening chore of milking cows, and lifting her face to the heavens prayed, "Lord, let this child I am carrying be a boy to take care of my in my old age." Time passed and on the 19th day of January, 1868, my father, Colby Franklin Bullock was born. My grandfather died when his only son was six months old.
Grandmother was no left a widow at 26 with five children to care for. She told us how she would plow when her hands would cramp around the plow handles and the mule would drag her to the end of the row. In addition to farming, she taught school, no certificate was necessary. In later years she worked with Dr. Fears and Dr. Samuels of Appleby and came near getting in trouble for practicing medicine without a license. She rode horseback mile after mile when word came that she was needed.
Grandmother’s children were growing up now and one by one were leaving the nest. Martha Ann (Mattie) married William Wright and they settled near Appleby and raised eleven children to adulthood.
The second daughter, Emma (Coonie), so called, because a few days after she was born, her mother had a high fever and tossed her out of the bed thinking she was a coon! Aunt Coonie married Allen Fenton and the settled near Cushing in Nacogdoches County. Ten children were born to them. Two of the children are still living: Mrs. Margie Arrington and Mrs. Maud Sandlin.
The tird daughter, Elmina (Miny) married Theodore Vauter and they had two children: Ada and Jesse. They are both deceased. Grandmother grew sad when talking about Aunt Miny who died a very tragic death. On Christmas Eve morning she was in her garden picking turnip greens for dinner when a man rode up and without speaking to her, shot her. She died a few hours later. There had been some trouble between the families previously. The man was convicted and hanged several months later. People from all over the county came to "hanging".
The fourth daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Molly) married job Scogin and they settled at Cedar Bluff. All of their children are gone now, but they have many grandchildren and great grandchildren living in Nacogdoches County.
Colby Franklin, Grandmother’s beloved son, married Sarah (Sally) Winder. She was the daughter of PMC and Kerrenhappuch Herrin Winder in 1897. There were four children: Harley, the oldest son; Callie, who married Fred T. Holleman; Bessie, who is a retired school teacher; Arthur Franklin (Gib) who married Mary Gladys Cook in 1929. She now lives in the old home place in Cushing. Arthur (Gib) who was a peace officer in Nacogdoches County for many years died on December 28, 1983. Bessie is the only surviving member of the family. They are all buried in the Cushing Cemetery.
Our grandmother was the guiding light of our family. She died quietly on the morning of May 14, 1928 in here 87th year. The funeral was held under the big oak tree by her bedroom window. She is buried near the son she had prayed for in desperation that Spring evening so long ago.
