Troba V. McNutt Marquis Obituary Troba V. McNutt Marquis, 87, of Ontario, Oregon died Sunday, July 2, 2000 at her home after a prolonged illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 6, 2000 at Christian Life Fellowship, 366 S.E. 5th Street, Ontario, Oregon with Pastor Jack Becker, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Payette, Idaho. Services are under the direction of Ontario's Lienkaemper Chapel. Troba was born in Ontario, OR to James Francis (J.F.) and Nancy Maria Doty. She grew up living on the Snake River island crossed by the railroad, then known as "Doty's Island". She and her three sisters crossed the river daily by cable ferry or railroad bridge to attend Ontario schools until her later high school years. She was team captain of the Ontario girl's basketball team during her senior year. She married Clarence "Jay" McNutt in 1932 and moved to Mesa, Idaho where Jay was foreman of the post-depression era apple drier operation. Their son, Stanley was born there in 1933. The couple then returned to Ontario where Jay worked for Art Ackerman's Texaco at Oregon and Idaho Street. Daughter Jimalee (Dixie) was born in Ontario in 1937. In 1941 they moved to Payette and purchased the Texaco station on the main street of Payette which then became "Jay's Texaco". Troba epitomized the determination of many post-depression era women. She was a loving, caring wife, mother, community member and business woman who was successful in everything she attempted. When the man, hired to run the station while Jay was absent during WWII, took another job, she single handedly ran the service station, greasing cars, retreading worn tires, vulcanizing odd sized inner tubes to fit customer's cars and even vulcanizing women's rubber girdles! (Severe shortages affected everyone). She assisted Florence Hayden for a time opening the Denny's Cafe in Payette before starting a new children's clothing business known for 23 years as "Youthwear Fashion Center". Top of the line and custom fashions for women were soon added. Jay passed away in 1972. Troba closed "Youthwear" in 1975. She married Bob Marquis of Vale in 1973 and spent many happy years on the Marquis ranch three miles east of Vale, while nurturing a "step family" of two teenagers, Bob's children, Jim and Melody. The couple moved to their present home in Ontario in 1991. Troba was an active participant in the Payette C of C and many social organizations of Payette, Vale and Ontario over the years. She was a long time member of Christian Life Fellowship in Ontario. She is survived by her husband Robert C. (Bob) Marquis of Ontario and two children: Stanley E. McNutt of St. Maries, ID and Jimalee (Dixie) McNutt Mace of Vancouver, WA; three step-children: James R. Marquis of Lynwood, WA; Melody Marquis McIntyre of Vale and Ronald Watkins of Spokane, WA; six grandchildren: Steven Jay McNutt; Sheri McNutt Hendrix, Emmett; David Lewis McNutt, Kamiah, ID; Michael Jay Mace, Austin, TX; Jeffrey Kenneth Mace, Tulsa, OK; Lisa Mace York, Vancouver, WA: two step-grandchildren: Brendan Marquis, Lynwood, WA. and Amanda Ledford Esquivel of Vale; Twenty great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. Troba was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters: Edna Doty Nelson of Ontario; Norma Doty Anderson of Salem, OR and Nora Doty Brown of Vancouver, WA.
