Notes for Jan Pietersen Scholl:
Jan Pieterson Scholls' name also appears as John Scull and Jean Schuyl. It is believed that a John Scull moved from England to Holland. The name John Skull appears in a will made by Alice (Alicia) Skull of Brinckworth, Wiltshire December 28, 1649. In that will it is reported that John Skull had gone into another land and it was unknown if he would return. The name Jean Scuyl appears on a petition dated 1651 in Holland. It is not known how the use of the name Scholl came about. It could have been assumed or the result of Dutch records where the Germanic surname was known and in use. After the English took control of New Amsterdam some of the descendants reverted to using the name Scull and others continued using the name Scholl.
The petition of 1651 was in response to the passage of The Navigation Act by Oliver Cromwell which ruined Dutch trade in the Caribbean Islands and Virginia. One of the results was an increase in emigration to New Netherlands.
The name of Peter Jansen Scholl first appears in the records of New Amsterdam on January 28, 1659.
