Notes for M
ARIAH HUMPHREY:
Mariah Humphrey was born a lave in 1847 on the Humphrey Plantation during a local typhoid epidemic shortly after her owner , Richard Humphrey, had completed the Historic Humphrey-Williams-Smith House in Robeson County North Carolina. In a November 12, 1995 feature article, the Robesonian speculates that during the very worst of the epidemic that took her owner, probably no one took notice of the birth of a little black child in one of the slave cabins, a little girl called Mariah who somehow managed to resist and survive the pestilence. Because of deaths and remarriages in her owners' family, she, her parents, and her sister later became the property of Henry Ellis and moved with him to a new farm nearby in 1858 when Mariah was about ten or eleven. A granddaughter of Mariah, Rebecca Blue McNeil, remembers her as a very small woman who served the community as a midwife. Mariah Humphrey Blue died of pneumonia in 1916 at the age of 68.
