1. ZACHARIAH¹ PATTERSON was born May 1846 in NC, and died in NC. He married SARAH C. MCLAURIN Unknown. She was born August 1852 in NC, and died in NC.

Notes for ZACHARIAH PATTERSON:
Zachariah Patterson was born a slave in October 1846 probably in Stewartsville Township, Richmond (later Scotland) County, North Carolina. He married Sarah McLaurin, whose family lived in the same area, and the family moved to Redspring Township, Robeson County, North Carolina sometimes before the 1900 census.

Notes for SARAH C. MCLAURIN:
Sarah McLaurin was born a slave in 1852 in Stewartsville Township, Richmond (later Scotland) County, North Carolina. She married Zachariah Patterson around 1868, three years after the Emancipation, when she was around sixteen and he was around twenty-two. The 1900 census indicates that she bore him 15 children of which 12 survived. She died around 1934 in Redspring Township, Robeson County, North Carolina. Her great grandson, Thomas McRae, remembers her as an imposing looking woman with long black hair, a goiter, and black piercing eyes. She had distinctively Indian features and was probably half Indian. She served her community as a midwife, and, as Thomas remembers was always present in his house when a new baby was expected. Thus, she delivered all of my ten siblings except Robert, who was born in 1936 a year or so after her death.
