Notes for Thomas Henry Fulkerth: Thomas and his wife moved from Ohio to Van Beuren Co., Iowa, in 1858. They lived there until April 16, 1853 when they commenced their westward trek to California. They arrived at Waterloo, San Joaquin County, CA, on August 26, 1863 where he practiced the trade of blacksmith. In 1869 they moved to Stanislaus County, CA, and again moved in 1884 to Hopeton, Merced County, CA. In 1896 they moved to Atwater, CA where he died in 1900. Catherine, his wife, died November 26, 1917. Both are buried at Atwater. They were the great grandparents of Peter and Jonathan McSwain.
In the 1860 Federal Census of Van Beuren Co., Iowa, listed as a resident in the Thomas Fulkerth household was Samantha Fulkerth, age 11 years, born in Ohio. The relationship of Samantha to Thomas Fulkerth is unknown. It is noted that his firstborn arrived while living in Iowa. There is no record of himhving ben previously married from which this child may have been an issue.
Thomas, like his brother Asa Shin Flkerth, was listed as a 'blacksmith.
