A 1741-1742: David McSwaine to Thomas Feips Indenture This Indenture Witnesseth that Elizabeth McSwaine of Baltimore County and Province of Maryland, Spinster, hath put her son David Macswaine, aged seven years and six months, and by those present doth voluntarily and of her own free will and accord, put him the said David a servant to Thomas Felps and Rosa, his wife, for the consideration of one new suit of Duroy, that is to say, coat, vest and Britches, one pair of new shoes and stockings, two Dowlow shirts of new linnen and one halt of twelve shillings price, and further doth agree to and with the said Elizabeth that he will give or cause to be given to the said David learning sufficient to read the holly Bible through distinkly, and after the manner of a servant to serve him the said Thomas Felps and Rosa his wife from this of this date forward for and during the time untill he the said David shall attain to his year of one and twenty year. During all which time the said David and his said Master and Mistress faithfully shall serve his Secretts keeping his lawfull commands, gladly every where obey, he shall do no Damage to his said Master nor see it done by others without letting or giveing notice thereof to his said Master, he shall not at any unlawfull galmes be found to play, whereby his said Master may have Damage with his own goods nor the goods of others, without license from his said Master, he shall not committ fornication nor contract Materamoney without his said Master’s leave, But in all things behave himself as a faithfull Servant ought to do during the said Term, and the said Master shall provide for the said Servant sufficient Meat, Drink, Apparil, working and lodging according to the customs of the Country, during the said Term, and for the true performance of all and every the said Covenants and Agreements either of the party bind themselves unto each other by those presents.
