MANCHESTER GRAMMER SCHOOL REGISTERS.
The admissions register for 28th June 1803 mentionsRichard, the son of Rev John Meadowcroft, of Billericay, Essex ." This scholar,I conclude is the son of of the scholar recorded in Vol 1 p141. His father had nothing to do with Billericay spiritually. At the beginning of the present century non-residence was very prevalent in the Parish of Essex. The clergy believed their parishes to be anguish and otherwise unhealthy and they migrated to Billericay for the sake of its elevation and bracing situation... at one time I am informed that there were upwards of 12 clergy in Billericay , and probably the Rev John Meadowcroft was one."
The earlier ref states :- " February 1767 John, the son of RevMr R MeadowcroftRechondon , probably of St Johns college Cambridge AB 1779 AM 1809. One Richard Meadowcroft [ probably of the same family ] a soap boiler and callico silk and cotton dyer of Long Millgate , Manchester and of a turn for chemistry is said by Aitkin to have greatly improved , in 1770 , the dying of silk handkerchiefs by the experiments he made."
