Notes for Charles Philippi:
In the 1860 census, Jackson, Poweshiek, IA there is a listing of "P.C. Philippi (28), and wife Catherine (30), Minnie b. 1852. It shows Charles as a grocer, real estate valued at $200, personal property valued at $800; born in Hessian Homburg. Catherine listed as born in Hessian Cassel, Germany, but Minnie was born in Ohio.

In the 1870 census, Jackson, Poweshiek, IA lists "Charles and Catharine Philippi" as being 38 and 39 years of age, he is a farmer, she is a housewife, no children. Real estate balued $2400, personal property $800. both list their birthplace as Prussia, Germany on this census.

In the 1900 census Jackson, Poweshiek, IA, Charles says he came to America in 1846.

"History of Poweshiek County, IA" published in 1880, lists Charles Philippi as a farmer and stock raiser, born April 14, 1832 in Germany" He remained there attending school until 1847

In the Marshall County News, dated June 22, 1883, an article titled "Almost a Twister", cites "the high wind that accompanied the heavy rain that fell last Saturday morning did considerable damage in this vicinity." Chimneys were blown off buildings, trees were destroyed, and houses were moved off foundations, farm building were damaged. Philip Philippi's house was blown down and a child two years old was killed, and Mrs. Philippi was injured." This child was Nicholas August Philippi, who was buried in the North Elm Cemetary in Balderson twp, Marshall, KS.
