Notes for Frederick Sternitzky:
Frederick was born in Kleinujeschitz, Germany. His father died when he was 11 years old. He married Helena Dietz, and for some years continued to reside in Germany, where the first four children were born Charles (Carl), Gottlieb (James), Susan and William.

The Sternitzke family and the Georg Garbsch family are listed in the "German-American Genealogical Research Monograph no. 7, Nineteenth Century Emigration of 'Old Lutherans' From Eastern Germany (mainly Pomerania andLower Silesia) to Australia, Canada , and the United States" According to the monograph, there was religious persecution occuring in Prussia. King Friedrich Wilhelm III forced the merger between the Lutheran and Calvinist (Reformed) churches in 1817. Those who used the ancient Lutheran form of worship committed civil disobedience. The Sternitzky family left for America where they would be free to express their religious views.

On June 24, 1840, the family left , where they landed after a three month's passage in a sailing vessel. Fred had no particular place in view when he came, merely wishing to establish a new home in a country of wider opportunities.

His first location was at Buffalo, N.Y. but in the following spring he came west to Milwaukee, WI, and there, followed the occupation of laborer on farms or otherwise until 1856. While residing there his wife had 6 additional children.
