Descendants of Richard Sessions

Generation No. 2

2. JOSEPH2 SESSIONS (RICHARD1)1 was born 1774 in Sampson County, NC, and died February 03, 1838 in Natches, Adams County, MS. He married SARAH HOWARD1 1797 in Adams County, MS, daughter of JOSHUA? HOWARD. She was born 1776, and died in Sampson County, NC.

Notes for J
OSEPH SESSIONS:
LDS has all 5 children of Joseph and Sarah born in Sampson County, NC, and Adams County Tax records show three Sessions in 1818 (Boone Sessions, Richard Sessions and Joseph Sessions.) There are three Sessions in the index of the 1820 Adams County census. It appears these three Sessions men moved from NC to MS between 1814-1818, with the rest of the family following over the next few years.

Children of J
OSEPH SESSIONS and SARAH HOWARD are:
  i.   RICHARD WASHINGTON3 SESSIONS, b. 1797.
  ii.   MARY SESSIONS, b. 1799.
  iii.   PHILIP SESSIONS1, b. January 23, 1802, Sampson County, NC1; d. January 23, 1867, Adams County, MS.
  Notes for PHILIP SESSIONS:
Buried in Natches City Cemetery, Zurhellen II Section, with His father and several other Sessions.
Listed on the 1850 Census in Holmes County, MS as a planter living with Albert and family.
There is also a boy named Philip on that Census, may be Albert's or Philip's, not known for sure.

iv.   CORNELIA SESSIONS, b. 1803; m. JOHN BOYNTON, 1829, Natches, Adams County, MS; b. Philadelphia, PA; d. Bef. 1860, Natches, Adams County, MS.
  v.   ELIZA ANN SESSIONS1, b. April 03, 1806, Sampson County, NC1; d. April 23, 1878, Natches, Adams County, MS.
  vi.   JOSEPH FERDINAND SESSIONS1, b. July 06, 1808, Adams County, MS1; d. July 09, 1837, Holmes County, MS.
  Notes for JOSEPH FERDINAND SESSIONS:
The Tombstone at Broughman Cemetery in Holmes County, MS says:
Joseph Ferdinand Sessions-b. Adams Co, Miss 7/6/1808 d. 7/9/1837 Son of Joseph and Sarah Sessions
However, LDS has him and all these siblings born in Sampson County, NC.

viii.   CAROLINE SESSIONS, b. 1813; m. JOHN M. MAURY, 1829, Natches, Adams County, MS; b. TN; d. Bef. 1860, Natches, Adams County, MS.
  Notes for CAROLINE SESSIONS:
Caroline and Cornelia Sessions were married in a double ceremony in 1829.

11. ix.   JAMES PERRY SESSIONS, b. September 06, 1814, Sampson County, NC; d. March 27, 1886, Holmes County, MS.
  x.   DELIA SESSIONS, b. 1815.

3. BATHSHEBA2 SESSIONS (RICHARD1) was born 1776, and died Aft. 1860 in Sampson County, NC. She married JOHN HERRING 1805 in sampson county, NC. He was born 1776 in Sampson County, NC, and died March 03, 1814 in Sampson County, NC.

Notes for B
ATHSHEBA SESSIONS:
In a letter dated 2/20/1860 from James Perry Sessions of Jackson, MS to John W. Sessions of San Francisco, "Beersheba" is mentioned as being one of 2 siblings of Joseph still living, and residing in Sampson County, NC "at the advanced age of 84 years". Also in this letter, James refers to his father's sister as having married a "Crommedy" or Cromartie, and the sister called Nancy married a "Herring", and no mention of a Sarah Boone Sessions having married a Cromartie, as has been mentioned in other historical records, so there seems to be some confusion regarding the sisters.

Children of B
ATHSHEBA SESSIONS and JOHN HERRING are:
  i.   WILEY3 HERRING.
  ii.   JOSEPH HERRING.
  iii.   SILAS HERRING.
  iv.   JOHN HERRING.

5. RICHARD2 SESSIONS (RICHARD1) was born 1786.

Children of R
ICHARD SESSIONS are:
  i.   MARIA3 SESSIONS.
ii.   MELINDA SESSIONS, b. August 11, 1806, Adams County, MS; d. February 17, 1833, Adams County, MS; m. UNKNOWN ALEXANDER.
  Notes for UNKNOWN ALEXANDER:
There is one Alexander on the Spanish Head of Household census of 1792, Isaac Alexander, who lived at Second and Sandy Creek. Since Joseph Sessions and his brother Richard settled at Second and Sandy Creek as well, I am surmising that it is this Alexander family whose son married Richard's daughter Melinda. Melinda is buried in the Sessions family plot, but not with a husband.

This information was researched at Natchezbelle.org:
This alphabetized index of the 1792 Spanish Census reflects Heads of Households only.
The census takers were Spaniards, as evidenced by the Spanish interpetation of many of the names. No attempt has been made to "Americanize" the names, change/correct spelling, or alter the names in any way. More detailed information about this census and the enumerated families can be found in the following: Residents of the Mississippi Territory Miscellaneous, Book 2A, by Jean Strickland & Patricia N. Edwards, pub. by Ben Strickland, P.O. Box 5147, Moss Point, MS 39563, 1995. This file may be downloaded for personal, non-commercial use only.
