"Richard Wright, Sr. born 1730 in Prince William Co., VA, married Ann and lived near Norfolk in 1765. Richard and his cousin John Wright, left the Anglican Church; John Wright was a staunch Baptist and Richard Wright became a Methodist.
Richard Wright is buried near the Uharie River in Randolph County, NC. His will (Rowan County, NC Will Book C207, made while weak in body on 3 Sep 1784 gave his wife 200 acres on Deep River where he formerly lived, his son, Benjamin, 200 acres on Deep River in Randolph County where used to live, his son Peter 260 acres in same locality, his son William 260 in Randolph County, his son Amos 100 acres where he lives, and sons Richard, John and Philburd. Wit: William Wright, Evans Wright, Richard Wight and James Morgan...."
Richard Wright, Sr., by Grant Wright: "Tradition has it that Richard Wright, Sr. was born in England, emigrated to Wales, came back into England, and he, with four brothers, emigrated to America probably sometime about 1746. They came to the Eastern coast of Maryland. Here they separated. Two went into New England, one went into New York, and Richard with one brother came into Virginia, the to Randolph Co., NC. Later Richard moved to Rowan Co., NC, where he spent the remainder of his life.
"According to D.A.R. records, Richard Wright, Sr., was born 1730 and died in 1785. We knew his will was probated in Feb. 8, 1785. Mr. Grant Wright says, 'He is supposed to have been buried in a cemetery on the Waters of the Uharie in Davidson Co. near the Randolph Co. line. There has not been a burial in that cemetery for more than 100 years. the graves are marked with crude stones bearing no inscriptions.. It seems that Richard Wright, Sr. was a large land-owner and accumulated well for one in his day. Richard Sr. was a revolutionary soldier, a private in the NC Militia from Rowan Co. It is said that his five oldest sons also fought in the Revolution.
"We know that Richard Wright, Sr., and his sons Benjamin, Richard, Jr. and William have been used many times for D.A.R. membership. We have no information about Peter or John. ...
"Grant Wright says he had the names and dates of Richard Wright, Sr.'s children from Elder Ezekiel Wright of Putnam Co., Indiana, who sent them to his father many years ago. Miss Mary Lee Woodrum, of Putnam Co., IN, says her father also had the same names and dates."
