Notes for David Mead: David Mead founded Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1788. His daughter Sarah Mead was the first white child born in Crawford Country, PA, in 1789. David Mead was a Major General in the War of 1812. Notes for Janet Finney: In 1794, William Gill took possession of a tract of land on French Creek, Pennsylvania. He built a cabin, and raised corn during the summer. In the fall he went to Pittsburgh to get supplies and fetch his family. But the winter set in early, so he couldn't return until the following spring. When he arrived, he found the cabin occupied by Jenny Finney, who claimed possession of the land and stood in the door of the cabin with a rifle in her hand. She warned him to leave the premises or she would put a bullet through him. Mr. Gill decided to abandon his claim and settle further up French Creek. Jenny Finney remained in possession long enough to confirm her claim. In 1795 Jenny opened the first shool house in Meadville, in a log cabin. In 1797 she married David Mead, with whom she had six children. The tract of land settled by her eventually became the property of her daughter, Maria, who married William Gill, the son of her mother's adversary in the land dispute. Their descendants thus became joint owners of the contested land. |
