 Includes NotesNotes for John Gardner:
August 27, 2001 Posted by: Betty Meischen I have been told that my John Gardner whose will was probated in Stewart Co. TN 1842 was born in Sussex County Virginia in 1755. He married Elizabeth James in 1780 in Bertie County NC if the information I have received is correct. A daughter Eurydice Gardner was born to this union in 1784 in Bertie County NC who married George Grimes. Now this is my question for Gardner researchers: I have been told that the best possibility for parents is that of Martin Gardner. Who has knowledge of a Gardner living in Virginia in 1755 that has a son John? Many of these John Gardners are actually born in Bertie County. Now my information could be wrong about the Sussex County VA connection but I would like to hear from anyone who might know. Thanks.

Hi, my name is Jane Bagwell and I have a family link to John & Elizabeth James Gardner. My connection is through Nancy Gardner who married Peter Terry Buckingham. I know that John Gardner was formerly of Sumner County,Tennessee and came to Stewart County about 1806. I have never heard of Eurydice Gardner. I know that their is a connection between Grimes, Lattimer, Gardners. I have other information but have been unable to make a connects.

John Gardner who married Elizabeth James was probably born in Bertie Co. NC 1755-?1759 He's the one whose will we have in Stewart Co which names Dicey Grimes. May 4 1813 Stewart Co. Elizabeth swore that Edwin James was her lawful brother, and John Gardner swore that Edwin and Emanuel James were brothers.... so that's how we got that much. I've really not worked on this line much lately, so I don't know IF I told you that Martin's father was a John Gardner or not. I "think" that Martin Gardner was the father of John who married Elizabeth James. But that is about as far as I can go. But let's keep working on it!

JOHN GARDNER appears on the 1790 Census of Bertie County NC1-2-5-3--11 There are a lot of Gardners that appear on the list. There is an Everitt Gardner and it looks like another John Gardner.

There is a LDS record of an Emmanuel James christened 8 Dec 1745 in Albermarle Parish, Surry, Virginia His father was Emmanuel James and his mother was Sarah LDS record of birth of Imanuel James 1714 York Virginia

From the above message, it can be deduced that Elizabeth Gardner was the sister of Edwin James and Emanuel James who married Patience Gardner. Emanuel, Edwin and Elizabeth James were the children of Emanuel James. Elizabeth James’ brother Edward was a revolutionary war veteran. Furthermore, Patience Gardner James is the daughter of James Gardner (see will below). In this will is listed John Gardner but take note that he is deceased by 1790. James Gardner further mentions his three deceased BROTHERS as William, Martin and John. He does not mention John as being one of his children however, it is possible that the deceased John Gardner may be the father of our John Gardner.
