Anne Marie Ilsabein was born at 3 p.m. 10 April 1774 and baptized 13 April in Evangelical Church ofEnger-St. Dionysius; her sponsors were Wehemeyer from Oetinghausen, Menckenfrom Beckum and Blasen from "Blanke church road" in Werther. JohannFriedrich and Anne Marie Ilsabein were married in Evangelical Church of St.Dionysius in Enger (just over three miles west of Herford), Westfalen, Germany;the record reads, "13 December 1800 Johann Friedrich Meyer from the parishof Schildesche (an eastern suburb of Bielefeld), 20 years old, married AnneMarie Ilsabein Herringerbaumer living in Herringhausen (near Lippstadt), 24years old; page 172 in 1800 Register." Their son, Johann Heinrich was bornin House No. 22 in Herringhausen; sponsors at his baptism were Brunger,Vordehoff, Greshoven and Einem; the church register noted his death in 1822.They had moved to Oetinghausen when second son Caspar Heinrich was born inHouse No. 20, "at the farmer Schnier" - the birth at 4 a.m. 4 March 1813 was recorded at the town hall 6 March 1813. Sponsors for Caspar Heinrich's baptism 12 March 1813 in Evangelical Church of Hiddenhausen were"Johann Caspar Heinrich Herringerbaumer and Johann Heinrich Ellerbrock,both brothers-in-law, and Hermann Heinrich Kampmann from Oetinghausen."(It appears Johann Caspar Heinrich Herringerbaumer was a brother of Anne MarieIlsabein Herringerbaumer and Johann Heinrich Ellerbrock was the husband of AnneMarie Ilsabein's sister.) No other children were found for Johann Friedrich andAnne Marie Ilsabein Meyer in the church books of Enger and Hiddenhausen. Thisfamily has been researched by Norma Gierke Meier who visited the towns andvillages of Oetinghausen, Hiddenhausen, Herringhausen, Kirchspeil-Heepen, Herford, Sundern and Radewig in 1995. Caspar Heinrich Meierwas actually born in Oetinghausen, however that village no longer has apostoffice and goes by the address of Hiddenhausen (a nearby village). This isa heavily populated area of western Germany, the little towns all but toucheach other, leaving little room inbetween for farms. One can drive from one toanother of all the above towns in a matter of a few minutes.

His birth is recorded inBirth Register, Lutheran Church, Oetinghousen (address is now Hiddenhausen),Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Godparents at his baptism 12 March inOetinghausen were Casper Heinrich Herringerbaumer, Johann Henrich Ellerbrok andHermann Henrich Kampmann. Marriage Register of the same church records themarriage of Caspar and Hanne. The latter gives information on the birth ofHanne and her parents. At the time of his marriage Casper is shown as a"heuerling" (a laborer). Hanne wore a black bonnet for her marriageand brought the bonnet with her when she emigrated to America about 1875 withher little grandson John Henry Meier. She was a widow, her son Frank hadrecently been killed by a horse. Son Dietrich Friedrich Gottlieb had alreadyemigrated. Little John Henry's mother had died when he was only five, hisfather had remarried and the little boy was not doing well in the new family.His grandmother left for America with John Henry. The ship was quarantined dueto an outbreak of measles upon its' arrival. Hanne Margareth gave her grandsona picture to help him prove their identification following their quarantine andseparation. At the end of the quarantine they made their way to Traverse City,Michigan where daughter Johanna Westjohn and son Dietrich Friedrich Gottlieblived. Sometime later they made their way to Illinois and settled in the areaof Milks Grove Township in Iroquois County. Hanne died there on Christmas Eveof 1893. The Comet, Clifton, Illinois, issue of 30 December 1893 carried thisnotice, "Mrs. Johanna Meier died at the residence of her son Gottlieb lastSunday. She was 76 years and six months old." She was buried in the samebonnet she wore on her wedding day back in Germany and was buried in a casketmade by Henry Meier, the little grandson she brought from Germany. Hergravemarker was a wooden cross (Arnold Meier recalls the cross with convolutedarms in an oil painting he did of Milks Grove Cemetery in the 1930s); thecemetery in which she is buried is located at the center of Section 28 and isthe site of the old town hall.

Johann was baptized 31January in Oetinghausen; his godparents were Johann Heinrich Holtkamp ofSchweicheln, Bernhard Heinrich Weitkamp and Hermann Heinrich Brinkmann, both ofHerringhausen. He was born in house #50 in Oetinghausen. He was a"schlossers"  (locksmith) inOetinghausen (a small village using address of Hiddenhausen by 1977).  He first married Anne Marie Louise Gosling inNovember of 1866 and she died less than a year later with their infantdaughter. He second married Anne Catharine Ilsabein Heidemeier in April of1869. They had two sons, Johann Heinrich (little John Henry who emigrated toAmerica with his grandmother) and Friedrich Wilhelm August who lived for lessthan two years. Johann lost his second wife in 1875.

In less than eight years hehad buried two wives and two children. Family legend says he married again andhad several children. But to date nothing has been discovered of them or of hisdeath date. His birth record is found in the Evangelical-Lutheran Church atOetinghausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. His first and second marriagerecords are found at Evangelical-Lutheran Church in nearby Herford.

Notes for FRED WESTJOHANN:

He was a blacksmith andthey lived at Stolen/Solen, Michigan near Good Harbor. Martha Meier Bond saidthey called their aunt Johanna "Tante Hanken" and she wore a wirebustle when the Westjohns visited Gottlieb Meier family nearby in Michigan. Johannawould jump down from their buggy and her wire bustle went on wiggling longafter Johanna jumped. Martha said she and her brothers and sisters would laughto see Tante Hanken's bustle wiggle. She had a square face with beautiful largeeyes; black and white photos show pale eyes, which were probably blue. Gertrudeand John Lichty lived in Detroit, Michigan and had a large family.

The family Bible ofGottlieb Meier gives marriage date and birth dates of their children. BornDietrich Friedrich Gottlieb Meier he was adopted or fostered by WilliamSchluter and brought to America about 1868. He remembered coming up theMississippi River and stopping at St. Louis. He passed the time by watching menmeasure the water depth with a knotted rope. Gottlieb's mother was widowed,another son, Frank, had been kicked by a horse and was ill. She also had thecare of her grandson John Henry Meier (whose mother had died) and so allowedthe Schluter family to bring her son to America. Later he took back the surnameof Meier. Arnold Raymond Meier and Martha Meier Bond said in an interview 6October 1977 that their father Gottlieb farmed and had 40 acres of timber landnear Good Harbor, Michigan (Leelanau County). His farm was on the northernslope of Sugar Loaf Mountain. The timber land was logged and many logging campswere in the area. Before Gottlieb's marriage he left Michigan and came toChicago. He married near there and lived there for a time, coming to Herscherand Milks Grove area about 1892. By 1903 the family had returned to Michiganfor a time. Here the infant Carl was stillborn and is buried in Shetland CreekLutheran Cemetery. Martha walked two miles to school at Shetland Creek, nearGood Harbor. The family had returned to Herscher by 1907. For a time theyfarmed the Berger farm west of Clifton in Milks Grove Township. Martha was bornat this farm and Hanne Margarethe Louise Holtkamp Meier died there. Gottliebwas later a gardener for Len Small at Kankakee, Illinois. Daughter Martha waschristened 18 May 1892 at Zion Lutheran Church, Bonfield, Illinois; Arnold waschristened there 25 August 1907. Martha, Rudolph and Maria were confirmed inthe same church at Bonfield and Anna was married there to Friedrich Wesemann.

Gottlieb was present for anorganizational meeting of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at Herscher,Illinois 9 April 1909 according to Pilot Township History. We Remember -Herscher 100 Years (Herscher Centennail Book) records, "The Herscher Pilotdated April 28, 1921 announces the hiring of Gottlieb Meier as night watchman.Mr. Meier took his job very seriously. He is remembered as standing on thecorner with a stop watch checking speeders. They would be confronted the nexttime he saw them. He made his rounds with his dog, Jake. A few Herscheritesrecall throwing firecrackers at the pair. The job as constable was not desiredby everyone as the hours were long and lonely and the pay small."  Gottlieb and Marie are buried at Herscher.

According to 1900 IllinoisCensus he came to U.S. in 1882. He was known as Henry Meier; his birth isrecorded in Birth Register, Evangelical-Lutheran Church, Herford, Germany, thetown in which his father was a locksmith. He was born at house #449 in AlstadtHerford (the old section of Herford) and baptized 21 November according tochurch records. The godparents were not named. His mother died when he was fiveyears old, his father remarried. He came to America in the 1870s with hisgrandmother Hanne Margarethe Louisa Holtkamp Meier and first lived in Michigannear his uncle

Gottlieb Meier (the two menwere only ten years apart in age and seemed to live near each other whether thearea be near Good Harbor, Michigan, or Milks

Grove in Iroquois County,Illinois or in Chicago area.) Henry followed his Uncle

Gottlieb to Iroquois Countyand married there. He lived briefly in Chicago, then returned to Clifton,Illinois where he owned and operated a farm just west of Clifton. Henry receivedhis final certificate of naturalization 17 October 1896, renouncing allegianceto the Emperor of Germany. The Advocate, Clifton, Illinois, issue of 13 April1933 reported, "Kern Bros. of Chicago, sold Wednesday to Henry Meiers ofClifton, one of two farms owned by them, formerly a part of the Cummingsestate, containing 160 acres. The land is located 1/2 mile west of Clifton andbrought $85 an acre cash, or an advance of $10 an acre over what the Kern Bros.Paid for the land a short time ago." Henry and Elizabeth were members ofthe Lutheran Church at Chebanse and are buried at Chebanse, Illinois.

Harry, raised in the Lutheran Church atChebanse, never attended church again, but faithfully drove Marguerite to herchurch in either Ashkum or Clifton every Sunday. Their farm, purchased in 1944,was located in Section 4, Chebanse Township, Iroquois County, one-half milewest of Clifton. Vernon was a farmer atClifton, Illinois following his army service during the Korean War. He beganhis postoffice career in 1945 which lasted for 46 years. He was elected to thestate board of the Illinois Rural Letter Carriers' Association in 1964, servedseveral offices until his presidency, then was state steward until 1981 when hewas elected to the national board. He was president of the National RuralLetter Carriers' Association when he retired from the postal service in 1991.He continued farming until his election as national secretary necessitated hismove to Washington, DC in 1983. At this time he retired from farming and fromthe Chebanse Township Fire Department which he served as Fire Chief. Afterretirement from the postal service and moving back to his farm at the northwestcorner of Clifton (Section 3), he was elected as mayor of Clifton and asRepublican Precinct Committeeman. He also served on board of directors of FirstNational Bank and on the board of the bank's holding company - these kept himbusy up to the day of his death. Norma is a long time genealogist and localhistorian. Both were members of St. Peter's Catholic Church at Clifton. Vernonis buried at Clifton.
