PHILLIP3 LAVOIE, SR. (PHILIP FELIX2, PHILIPPE1) was born 24 December 1863 in St.
George, Kankakee County, Illinois, and died 2 March 1952 in Ashkum, Iroquois
County, Illinois. He married ROSANNA HUBERT 1 April
1888 in L'Erable, Iroquois County, Illinois.
She was born 7 December 1871 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and died 22 May
1958 in L'Erable, Iroquois County, Illinois.
Notes for
PHILLIP LAVOIE, SR.:
Philip
and Rosanna were married on Easter morning in 1888. The Advocate, Clifton,
Illinois, issue of 21 April 1938 told of their anniversary, "GOLDEN
WEDDING - married 50 years ago Easter morning Mr. and Mrs. Philip Lavoie, Sr.
of Ashkum community, celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary Sunday night
with a happy dance at the Ashkum Coliseum. How Philip Lavoie and Rosanna Hubert
met is one of the stories the jolly couple love to tell. Philip, a boy of 11
living with his father on the farm northeast of Ashkum back in 1875, saw
Rosanna for the first time when her sister Mary brought her to the Lavoie home
after Philip's father, Felix, had taken Mary for his second wife. Philip used
to rock 3-year-old Rosanna to sleep when eventide came, and watch over her when
she came to visit her sister. And so they grew up together. Then on Easter
Morning, 1888, Philip was 24 and Rosanna 16 the two were united in marriage at
St. John's church in L'Erable, by Fr. Decouvrir. The Lavoies farmed a year for
Philip's brother-in-law then labored 13 long years before he finally secured
his own farm in northern Iroquois County in 1902. In these first fourteen years
seven children were born, Ed. first, then Frank, Dave, Francis, Philip Jr.,
Zilda and Henry. After the Lavoies had their own farm the others came, Zephyr,
Helen, Bertha, Leon and Lucille. Eleven years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lavoie came to
the farm six miles northeast of Ashkum, where they now reside with a son,
Frank. Until a few weeks ago Mr. Lavoie was able to do a full share of work
around the farm, despite his 74 years, but then rheumatism took its toll and
until a few days ago Mr. Lavoie was confined to his bed. But the glowing
promise of that golden Anniversary loomed ahead and Mr. Lavoie arose to the
occasion with it. His wife, Rosanna Hubert, the daughter of Francis X. Hubert
and Julia Ducharme, was born Dec. 2, 1872 in Bridgeport, Conn. She came with
her parents westward to Pittsburgh, then on to a farm one mile north of where
she now lives. Mr. Lavoie was born in 1864 on Dec. 24, just a half an hour
before midnight spelled Christmas Day, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Felix
Lavoie. He lived with his parents in Kankakee county until 1871 when he moved
to Chebanse township and thence to a farm near his present location. Sunday
night the children, seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren and a
few other guests gathered at their farm home for a bounteous dinner, follwed by
reminiscing and then the great dance. - Iroq. Co. Times. Mrs. Abe Reid, Mrs.
Henry Nelson, and C. P. Werkau are nieces and nephews of the Lavoies, and were
among those present at the celebration Sunday evening." The Daily Journal, Kankakee, Illinois, issue
of 22 May 1958 reported, "FUNERAL SATURDAY FOR MRS. LAVOIE, 86, OF
L'ERABLE - L'ERABLE (JNS) - Mrs. Rosanna Hubert LaVoie, 86, lifelong resident

JOHN BAPTISTE CLEMENT
"CLEM"3 LAVOIE (PHILIP FELIX2, PHILIPPE1) was born 25 May 1869 in Clifton, Iroquois
County, Illinois, and died 28 February 1945 in L'Erable, Iroquois County,
Illinois. He married MELINDA BERNIER 22
December 1891, daughter of JOHN BERNIER. She was
born 28 August 1870, and died 3 October 1918 in Ashkum, Iroquois County,
Illinois.
Notes for
JOHN BAPTISTE CLEMENT
"CLEM" LAVOIE:
Melinda
was baptized Marie Mathilde Bernier on 9 October 1870 at St. John the Baptist
Catholic Church, L'Erable, Illinois (entry #1177 in Record Book One by Norma
Meier); entry #1053 shows the baptism on 30 May 1869 for John Baptiste Clement
Lavoie. During the 1918 flu epidemic The Advocate, Clifton, Illinois, issue of
Thursday 10 october 1918 reported, "MRS. MELINDA LAVOIE - ARTHUR LAVOIE -
ORVILLE LAVOIE - To a community overburdened with sickness and death, tragedy
and sorrow, there came a tremendous shock in the tragic death of Mrs. Clem
Lavoie, preceded and followed by the death of her sons Arthur and Orville. The
surviving members of the family have the largest measure of sympathy of all who
know them. Their boundless grief is accorded the kindest thoughts, the most
sympathetic words, and the friendliest acts of assistance and encouragement.
Pneumonia entered the home of Mrs. Lavoie in the residence of her father, John
Bernier, in Ashkum. The mother, unable to procure professional assistance
because of the unusual demand for nurses, tenderly and ceaselessly cared for
her sons Arthur and Orville. In addition to the arduous toil and nervous
strain, her mother heart ached with anxiety for her soldier son, Eddie, across
the sea in France. Tuesday, October 1st, aftr a week's illness, Arthur breathed
his last. Thursday was set as the time for his funeral. Early Thursday morning,
neighbors who had cared for Orville through the night departed, after awaking
Mr. Bernier. Mrs. Lavoie lay down beside her daughter Eva, who soon was
awakened by the gasping of her mother in a death struggle. She called others
and it was discovered that Mrs. Lavoie had stabbed herself in the neck with a
small knife. A doctor was called, but she was past all help and died in a short
time. The coroner's inquest brought out a verdict recognizing the cause of the
tragic act as being the breaking down of the mother's mind through grief, worry
and physical exhaustion. The son Arthur's funeral was postponed and a double
funeral was held in L'Erable Friday, Oct. 4, conducted by Rev. Fr. Levasseur.
Burial was made in the L'Erable cemetery. On Monday afternoon, Orville Lavoie,
after an illness of two weeks with pneumonia, passed away, having never known
of the tragic death of his mother and the fatal illness of his brother. His
funeral was held in L'Erable Wednesday, October 9. The families of Henry
Bernier and Wilbert Bernier, brothers of the deceased mother, were all ill
during these distressing days. Melinda Bernier, daughter of John Bernier, was
born August 28, 1870, and was a lifetime resident of this section of the
country. She was married to Clem Lavoie in 1892. She was the mother of seven
children, and faithfully gave herself for them, to the point of breaking down.
Of her family there remains Mabel Reid, Yvonne and Delia, and Eddie, who is in
our army in France. Clem Lavoie survives his wife. Her father and her two
brothers, aforementioned, survive to grieve with the son and daughters. Arthur
Lavoie was born February 24, 1897. He registered for military service last June
and had recently made application for enlistment as a mechanic at the aviation
field in Rantoul. He was eager to get into the service. He was a member of the
Catholic Order of Foresters and had provided insurance, with his mother as
beneficiary. he was an industrious young man, highly valued by his employers as
a farm hand and enjoyed the esteem of all who knew him. Orville Lavoie was born
February 4, 1899. He was in the last registration, and was anxious to emulate
his eldest brother as a soldier in France. He was a steady worker and helped
his brother support their mother and youngest sister. Like his brother, he was
highly thought of by his employers and friends and many will mourn his early
death." The Advocate, Clifton, Illinois, issue of Thursday, 8 March 1945
reported, "LAST RITES ARE HELD IN ASHKUM FOR CLEM LAVOIE - Funeral srvices
were held at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Assumption church of Ashkum for Clem
LaVoie, 78, who died at L'Erable Wednesday evening Feb. 28 as a result of
pneumonia. The Cloke-Croxen funeral home was in charge and burial was in the
Ashkum cemetery. A native of Beaverville, Mr. LaVoie moved to Kankakee with his
family while a child. He is survived by two brothers, Phillip of L'Erable and
Delphus of Kankakee; and two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Jensen of Clifton and Mrs.
Delia Crooks of Chicago. Three sons and a daughter preceded him in death."
Daughters Delia and Mabel, with their husbands, are buried in Clifton, Illinois;
they had no children.
