Notes for JOHN VALENTINE FOGARTY:

The Advocate, Clifton, Illinois, issue of 3 June 1937 reported, "Jack Fogarty, born and raised to young manhood east of town, but who moved away from here forty years or more ago, was in town a short time Monday, the first time in many years. Naturally he met a few people he knew."  The same newspaper, in an issue dated 23 August 1951 told of John's retirement  from Illinois Central Railroad. He began his railroad career as a flagman on the suburban service during the 1893 World's Fair/The Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In 1894 he started firing and in 1899 began as an engineer. He had been an engineer on the famed Panama Limited and the Green Diamond passing through Chebanse and Clifton from 1943 to 1951, blowing his train whistle for the "home folks."

Maria T. Manhart says John died 21 October 1954, Kankakee, Illinois.

Notes for JOHN HENRY FITZGERALD:

John was always a Democrat according to a biography in Portrait and Biographical Record of Iroquois County, pub. 1893. For fourteen years he was a school director and in 1893 was Drainage Commissioner of Milk's Grove Township, special district No. 1. They are buried in Clifton, Illinois.

He was born and died on the same farm where he lived all his life. 1917 prairie Farmer Directory, Iroquois Copunty, lists, "Ray Fitzgerald, wife Julia Donovan Fitzgerald, farming at Rt. 2, Clifton, Milks Grove Township, Section 36, a tenant on 160 acres owned by John Fitzgerald."

 

 

5.  THOMAS H.3 FITZGERALD (MARIA2 FOGARTY, PATRICK1) was born 1848 in Ireland, and died 3 Jun 1902.  He married HELEN "NELLIE" FOGARTY. 

 

Notes for THOMAS H. FITZGERALD:

Patrick Fitzgerald and Catharine Fitzgerald were godparents at 24 October 1873 baptism of Edward Fitzgerald by Father Gonant at St. Peter Catholic Church, Clifton, Illinois, according to an early church register being transcribed by Norma Meier in 2001. Thomas was on the police force in Chicago for many years. Thomas and Nellie are buried in Chebanse, Illinois. There is a record of birth/baptism for Helena Fogherty, baptized on day of birth to Jacob or James Fogherty and Anne Lay, in registers of Maternity BVM Catholic Church, Bourbonnais, Illinois.

7.  HENRY PATRICK3 FOGARTY (JOHN2, PATRICK1) was born Abt. 1863 in Clifton, Iroquois County, Illinois, and died 29 Sep 1931 in Ashkum, Iroquois County, Illinois.  He married ORPHA DAILEY.  She was born 1885 in Michigan, and died 15 Jan 1940 in Escondido, California.

 

Notes for HENRY PATRICK FOGARTY:

Henry was engineer for Illinois Central Railroad and was instantly killed when his engine turned over after hitting the switch between Clifton and Ashkum, Illinois to allow passage for the "Illinois Central's crack flier, the Creole, north-bound from New Orleans to Chicago." It was his last run before retirement. He is buried in Oakwoods Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois.

Notes for WILBUR J. MAYO:

He attended Chicago College of Dental Surgery and was graduated from Loyola University in 1942 with a degree in Dental Surgery. Dr. Mayo served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946, then 12 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve attaining the rank of commander. He opened his office for dental practice in general dentistry April 1946 in Bradley, illinois. He was a charter member of the Bradley Lions Club and served as deputy district governor. He coached Little League baseball, served as a scout master and was a board member of Bishop McNamara High School. He is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Kankakee, illinois.
