(These emails appeared in Digest Number 61, 28 Jul 2000 of "mailing list egyjews@egroups.com"

A. In Camp David discussions hold on these days , the Palestinian side is raising the refugees issue with the "right to return to Palestine / Israel" and to get huge compensations from the Israeli government . NOW IT IS THE TIME TO RAISE THE ISSUE OF JEWS THAT WHERE LIVING IN ARAB COUNTRIES AND FORCED TO LEAVE AS RESULT OF THE WAR INITIATED BY ARAB COUNTRIES AGAINST ISRAEL IN PARTICULAR AND THE JEWS IN GENERAL . THEREFORE I THINK THAT EVERY MEMBER OF THE GROUP MUST TA KEA COMMITMENT TO RAISE THIS ISSUE BEFORE THE PUBLIC OPINION,IN ORDER TO SHOW THE SECOND SIDE OF THE COIN . OTHERWISE THE WORLD OPINION WILL BE VICTIM OF THE HYPOCRISY OF THE ARAB ATTITUDE ( AS WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE " YOU KILLED AND ALSO INHERITED ? " ) . I DON'T EXPECT COMPENSATIONS BUT JUST TO OFFSET THE NEGATIVE ARAB / PALESTINIAN MISUSE OF FACT AND DISTORTION OF THE HISTORY .

Best Regards and please try to attract your public opinion as much as possible.

Dear Mohamed Hawary,

Allow me just two words on Jews that have left Egypt (I don't know about other Arab countries). I can witness that my father who was born in Egypt, who worked in Egypt for half his life-time, never thought of working AGAINST Egypt. He was a simple tradesman, never bothered about politics, never desired to emigrate to Israel and has never been there even after. He had a quantity of suppliers, friends and customers among his fellows Egyptians Muslims, copts, Greeks, Armenians, etc. He spoke, read and write perfect Arabic. He was a very cultivated man, loved French literature, great admirer of the Arab literature and poetry and his only "luxury" were his books. And yet, one day he learned from the newspapers that his business was confiscated as well as all his belongings, etc. He was not a particularly rich man. We lived comfortably but nothing to do with Ali Baba sort of wealth, didn't own land or any kind of property. Just a normal middle class person (which was still a good living at that time). The next day, he found a man sitting at his desk, in his office, who told him that from that day on, all what he spent a lifetime to build wasn't his any longer. What then was the choice? The books were sold at half a piaster the "wo'a" to a robabekia. (You must be too young to remember what a "Wo'a" was. It equals roughly 1,3 Kilos). The rest was practically given away. And we left for Italy, with our luggage and 20 pounds per person. This was the rule in 1962.

Like my father, hundreds of Jews, I would say most of the Jews from Egypt, who had spent all their lives in Egypt were compelled to go away. This is not a particularly sad or singular story. This a story that more or less you would hear and hear again if you had the opportunity to talk to the Jewish people who left Egypt between 1956 and the late sixties. Some were richer than others, some were very rich. But I can assure you that the great majority never worked against Egypt. It's just that Egypt did not want them anymore.

After President Sadat reopened the frontiers of Egypt, my father was still alive and we had the opportunity to go back, even for tourism. But he never wanted to.

And I think but have no evidence, that the percentage of Jews who left Egypt for Israel is well under 50%. All the others are spread around the world. The Law of return is not a good argument in this case.
Shalom to you, Mohamed. Lets hope for peace in earnest, in the deep of the heart, not only in words.

Dear Mohamed, if you meant that Jews left Egypt with their consent at any time prior to 1948, I wouldn't argue that, but if you meant it at all time, then you are wrong !! In 1956 and 1967 Jews forcefully left Egypt, some of them right from the concentration camps which they spent over 3 years, for no reason but being Jews born from Egyptian great great grand parents (my father and brother were among them in 1967-70) straight to the airport out of Egypt, leaving their money and properties behind !! There is a site which I couldn't fine for you to visit, to know more facts about this, but I promise when I found it I will send it to you !

Dear Mohamed Hawary

Let me add to what Jocelyn Mosseri said about HAVING TO leave Egypt. My father was given 24 hours to pack up our belongings and leave with a suitcase each and the allowance of $25 in our pockets for each of us.

The only tangible thing we took with us was a sewing machine which was almost destroyed by the Egyptian customs as they were searching for alleged gold hidden in the machine ( if Only that was true)

This was after two generations of Kriegers who were born in Alexandria, worked there, employed Egyptians at far better conditions than their own people.

One of our neighbours was an admiral in the Egyptian navy who could not believe what YOUR government had done to us, not only because we were Jews but because we were seen as foreigners in the land of our birth. He pleaded with my father to leave me behind as he considered me as his son as I had grown up with his children.

When I returned to Alexandria (twice) I was refused entry to our own apartment where I was born and where I still hold dear memories of the good life we had and that was taken away from us by YOUR People.

Dear Mohamed,

I do not know Mrs Jocelyne, author of the letter below. Please read it again as it is word for word the story of my own father with one difference, my father was expelled (he had to sign a document to never return to Egypt) in 1953. We also went to Italy and eventually to Brazil. My father died in 1974. He never went to Israel not even for a visit.

Best regards

Samuel:

I fully understand your points. I will add that when HSJE (I think it was Desi) kindly started this discussion group, it was stated that people are free to discuss any subject they want. For some reason, however, I thought that most members of the HSJE and this group are actually from the New York area, not Israel. But I stand to be corrected.

My concern with getting into the Arab-Israeli conflict is that emotions and disagreements run very deep. A lot of Jews suffered from this conflict and perhaps even more other Egyptians (one time I read that Egyptian casualties in the War of Attrition were about 50,000), not to mention other Arabs. This topic has a tendency to dominate discussion groups with angry messages flying back and forth. I am not interested in that kind of exchange.

The reason for my participation in this discussion forum is to learn first hand from "Jews from Egypt" about their experience and views and to exchange ideas and thoughts with them and others with the same interest. This is what I am interested in. Obviously there is room for all subjects of interest to members of this forum.

With respect to the message of Mohamed Al-Hawary and the responses it generated, I think that I have done my homework and I agree with those who responded. To the defense of Mohamed though, I must say that the majority of people in Egypt believe the story that the Jews of Egypt left by their choice. I think the media invented this story or people just don't want to face the ugly truth.

I believe that for the good of Egypt, the people of Egypt should come to terms with the real story of what happened to the Jews of Egypt. Just like the United States has recently begun to come to terms with what happened to Japanese and other ethnic groups during World War II. I believe that this
discussion group is very important for this and I would hate to see it turn into another fora for the Israeli-Palestinean debate. However, as I said above, I fully understand if people think differently.

A few years ago I read a book that contained a chapter on the question of Egyptian citizenship and the fate of the Jews of Egypt. I don't recall the book's name at the moment but here is a summary of what I remember:

The modern Egyptian citizenship did not exist before 1923 when Egypt became "independent" from the Ottoman Turkey which collapsed after World War I. Before that everyone was an Ottoman subject. The Egyptian Nationality laws required a person, his father and grandfather to be born in Egypt.

Some of the Jews living in Egypt at the time had European origins or connections or relatives in Europe. Those who were more affluent or more educated got European passports through embassies of their respective countries. This was more advantageous for them from a practical point of view.

The more educated or affluent of the Jews who had no European connections applied for Egyptian citizenship but the authorities made it very difficult for them to get it. This was the case with many Karaites for example. Some of the less educated or less affluent Jews didn't bother to apply for citizenship or to pursue the difficult legal and bureaucratic prossess, and remained stateless from a legal point of view.

Thus, when Nasser came to power, a portion of Egypt's Jews had European passports and it was possible to treat them as foreigners and apply the anti-foreigner campaign to them. The able ones of those managed to travel to European countries and were accepted by these countries.

This left a large number of Jews who were stateless since they never managed to get the Egyptian citizenship either due to the barriers put by the Egyptian government or because it didn't occur to them that they needed to prove that they were Egyptians. Also there was a number of Jews who got the Egyptian citizenship.

When Nasser started kicking the Jews out in the aftermath of 1956 and 1967, many of those who left Egypt did not have European passports or connection. Most of them had no choice but to go to Israel which was the only country to welcome.

Thus, Nasser inadvertently helped the cause of Zionism which he was supposed to be fighting.

I would appreciate it if members of this group can comment on the accuracy of this description.

From : Alain Bigio To : Mohamed Hawary,
"We also went to Italy and eventually to Brazil. My father died in 1974. He never went to Israel not even for a visit" . I got the impression that the time of the Moukhabarat is over . They are not listening your lines or reading your income letters . There is no more need to apologize being Jew and to "proof' we are NOT
linked to Israel as my late father was forced to do in Cairo at the beginning of the 50' .

From : Jocelyne Cohen Mosseri To : Mohamed Hawary,
"And I think but have no evidence, that the percentage of Jews who left Egypt for Israel is well under 50%. All the others are spread around the world." After 48-56-67 , Egyptian Jews went to several countries in the world , and there is no need to divide them between those who are living in Israel and those who are living in the Diaspora .There is no need to "minimize " the fact Egyptian Jews are living in Israel

Dear friends and members of the group , Please think about my remarks in red , and correct me if I am wrong .

Dear Samuel,

You are 100% right. However my story was not asking to be excused. More it was to show to Mr. Hawary how he has been told erroneously that all Jews wanted to emigrate to Israel, that is why they left Egypt. WE WERE EXPELLED short of any other motive but the wish to have Judenfrei Egypt. AND to take possession of the wealth left behind by those expelled.
