C. J. Scoggins, who ranks among the early settlers of Greene County, where he was born, and where he married Miss Mahala Brown, daughter of John Brown; 2 children blessed this union; Elizabeth, who married John Short, died on the 8th of May 1859, and was laid at rest in the Hutchens Cemetery (now known as Mt. Gilead); John, from whom our narrative is obtained, grew to manhood in Greene Co.

With Robert Scoggins, came his son C J, then a lad, who was formany years a resident of Woodville township, where he remained after his father's removal from the county.He is a native of Kentucky, born in 1815, and wasmarried in 1837, to Mahala Brown.He died July 15, 1883
