He married (1) ABIGAIL CARLETON 3 Apr 1749 in Bradford, Massachusetts20. He married (2) EUNICE FELLOWS 27 Sep 176621, daughter of SAMUEL FELLOWS and EUNICE ???.

3. NATHANIEL10 MERRILL (JOHN9, NATHANIEL8, NATHANIEL7, NATHANIEL6, NATHANIEL5 MERRELL, JOHN4, JOHN3 MERYELL, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born 26 Feb 1731/32 in Haverhill, MA26,27,28,29,30, and died in prob. Shelburne, MA31. He married ANNA BALDWIN 7 Nov 1754 in Pelham, NH32.

Notes for NATHANIEL MERRILL:
The evidence for the children of Nathaniel Merrill is largely conjectural.

In Kindred Konnections database f5813454, fishnc@xmission.com, the following seven children are listed for Nathaniel Merrill b. 26 Feb 1732/3 and Anna Baldwin: Mary Polly (no date), Nathaniel Jr. (no date), James (no date), Thaddeus (no date), Anna (no date), Joseph (no date), Benjamin (b. 2 Aug 1767 at Westminster, Worcester Co., Mass, d. 4 Nov 1854 at Deerfield Twp, Livingston Co., Michigan]. Also listed is John (b. 13 Feb 1707/8], which is obviously an error since John was the father, not the son of Nathaniel b. 26 Feb 1732/3. No source is given.

Nathaniel was born, probably in Haverhill, in 1731/2. According to GENDEX database lilhall, Anna was born about 1735. Nathaniel and Anna were married in 1754 in Pelham NH. Daughter Anna was born in 1761, birthplace unknown. Benjamin was born in 1767 in Westminster MA. Anna died in Shelburne in 1773. Nathaniel was in Deerfield in 1772-73 and in Shelburne in 1775, and again in Deerfield in 1792-93.

Aug. 1, 1775: A Nathaniel Merrill, of Shelburne, was in the Roll of Capt. Agrippa Wells. [Sheldon, History of Deerfield, Vol. 1, pg. 709].

In the 1790 U.S. Census, page 489 in Rowe, Hampshire Co., MA, there is a Lt. Nathaniel Merril [sic]. [Brøderbund Family Archive #311, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1790, Date of Import: Sep 4, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.311.1.1898.98]

In the 1790 U.S. Census, page 122 in Rowe Town, Hampshire Co., MA, there is a Lt. Nathaniel Merrill. [Brøderbund Family Archive #311, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1790, Date of Import: Sep 4, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.311.1.1898.99]

These Census records, which appear to be duplicates of each other, show one male 16+ (b.bef.1774), presumably Nathaniel. There are four males under 16 (b.aft.1774) and two females (age unknown). Benjamin was 23 years old and no longer at home; Anna had died 7 years earlier. Presumably the four sons are Thaddeus, Nathaniel, James, and Joseph. The females are Nathaniel's wife and his daughter Mary Polly. The five younger children were born between 1774 and 1790, most likely before 1780 when their mother reached age 45. We assume all five were born near Rowe "about 1777."

(We know that the Thaddeus who was married in Shelburne in 1801 to Achsah Severance produced children until 1824.)

ii.   BENJAMIN MERRILL, b. 2 Aug 1767, Westminster, Worcester Co., MA35; d. prob. Shelburne, MA.

 
Notes for BENJAMIN MERRILL:
In the 1790 U.S. Census of Rowe, MA there is a pair of records for a Benjamin and a Nathaniel Merrill who appear to be sharing a common household. Benjamin's family includes one male 16+ (b.before 1774) who could be Benjamin 23 (b.1767); a male under 16 (b.1774-1790) who could be a brother; and a female of unspecified age who could be his wife. Nathaniel's family includes two males 16+ (b.bef.1774) who could be Nathaniel and another brother both abt 16 (b.abt.1774); a younger brother abt. 12 (b.abt.1778); and a female of unspecified age.

It is tempting to conclude that Benjamin and Nathaniel are two of the five sons of Lt. Nathaniel Merrill b.1731/2, and that the the other family members are other siblings. But that leaves unexplained the four sons and daughter apparently living with their father Lt. Nathaniel Merrill (b.1731/2 in a household nearby. They cannot be simultaneously living with their father and their brothers in two separate households! The data are too thin to support further speculation.

Notes for NATHANIEL MERRILL:
In the 1820 U.S. Census, pg. 63 in Colrain, Franklin Co., MA, there is a Nathaniel Merrill. There is one male 26-44 (b.1776-1794] who could be Nathaniel abt 43 (b.abt.1777); one female 16-26 (b.1794-1804) who could be his daughter or wife; and one female 0-10 (b.1810-1820) who could be a daughter. There is one person involved in agriculture. If this is the family of Nathaniel, either his wife is missing or much younger than Nathaniel.

In the 1840 U.S. Census, pg 141 of Montague, Franklin Co., MA, there is a James H. Merrill. [Brøderbund Family Archive #316, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1840, Date of Import: Sep 4, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.316.1.7939.186]

The 1840 census record on page 141 needs to be examined.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, pg 305 of Montague, Franklin Co., MA, there is a James H. Merrill. [Brøderbund Family Archive #317, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1850, Date of Import: Sep 4, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.317.1.22061.34]

The 1850 Census record on page 305 needs to be examined.
