THADDEUS11 MERRILL (NATHANIEL10, JOHN9, NATHANIEL8, NATHANIEL7, NATHANIEL6, NATHANIEL5 MERRELL, JOHN4, JOHN3 MERYELL, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1777 in prob Rowe, MA72,73,74,75,76,77,78,79,80,81,82,83,84,85. He married ACHSAH SEVERANCE86 6 Aug 1801 in Shelburne, MA87,88,89, daughter of MARTIN SEVERANCE and LUCY WHITNEY.

Notes for THADDEUS MERRILL:
Who is Thaddeus Merrill the son of Lt. Nathaniel Merrill b.1731/2? In the absence of hard evidence, we reason as follows.

GENDEX database lilhall states that Nathaniel arrived in Franklin County, MA with his brother Daniel, prior to 1772. On the basis of an undocumented database in Kindred Connections we believe that Nathaniel had a son Thaddeus born in Rowe about 1777 (see Notes for Nathaniel Merrill b.1731/2).

Two candidates who may match this Thaddeus are: (1) Thaddeus Merrill of Shelburne, the husband of Achsah Severance, who was born about 1777 (according to the age given in 1850 Census); and (2) Thaddeus Merrill of Rowe, who married Chloe Smead (b.1759) in 1780. On the basis of the 1780 marriage date we may safely assume that Chloe's husband is an older Thaddeus Merrill, not Thaddeus b.abt.1777 the son of Nathaniel. Without proof, we guess that Thaddeus Merrill of Shelburne, the husband of Achsah Severance, is the son of Nathaniel Merrill b.1731/2.

Supporting this hypothesis is the fact that both Joseph Merrill and Thaddeus the husband of Achsah Severance chose to live in Shelburne; this would have been a natural choice for Thaddeus the son of Nathaniel, who was Joseph's first cousin.

1810 Census, Shelburne, Franklin, MA, pg.832: Thadeus Merrill. Family members include one male and one female 26-45 (b.1765-1784) i.e. Thadeus b.1777 and his wife Achsah b.1784; one female 45+ (b.bef.1765), possibly Thadeus' mother Anna Baldwin Merrill b.abt.1735; one male and one female 16-26 (b.1784-1794), unknown; one male and one female 10-16 (b.1794-1800), unknown; and three males

The 1820 Census record on page 37 includes one male and one female 26-44 (b.1776-1794] i.e. Thaddeus b.1777 and his wife Achsah b.1784; 1 male 16-25 (b.1795-1804] i.e. Joel b. 1801; 1 male 16-17 (b.1803-1804) i.e. Ira b.1803; one female and two males 10-15 (b.1804-1810) i.e. Tirzah b.1805, Caleb b.1806, and James b.1808; and five males 0-9 (b.1811-1820) i.e. Levi b.1810, David b.1812, Thaddeus 2nd b.1816, Martin born 1818, and Solomon b.1820. This is merely a consistency check; there is no proof that these family members were actually present.

In the 1830 U.S. Census there is a Thaddeus Merrill in Shelburne, Franklin Co., MA, page 114. [Brøderbund Family Archive #315, Ed. 1, Census Index: U.S. Selected Counties, 1830, Date of Import: Sep 4, 1997, Internal Ref. #1.315.1.6216.181]
