Shaking Family Trees by Don Merritt

MERRITT-HARRIS-CAMPBELL-SCOGGIN
The above surnames belong to my grandparents. On my paternal side were the MERRITT's & HARRIS's. On my maternal side were the CAMPBELL's & SCOGGIN's.

The MERRITT's & HARRIS's arrived in Forsyth Co., GA abt 1850. Josiah Merritt & his wife Elizabeth Atkinson Merritt came from Anderson Co., SC. Their son John W. Merritt, who married Eliz. M. Davis (dau. of Ephiram & Harriett R. Cannon Davis), was my great great grandfather. About this same time William West Harris who married Martha Julian was also living in Forsyth Co. Willaim West Harris was my paternal grandmother's (Nancy C. Harris Merritt) grandfather. My other Forsyth Co.,GA great great grandparents are Marion Pilgrim, Rhoda Ledbetter, Alberry Bruton & Mary E. Carruth.

I am descended from Duncan Campbell. Duncan Campbell had a son named Alexander H. who married Mary L. Penn. These were my maternal grandfather's (Will Campbell) Campbell grandparents. Will's mother was Mary Frances Harkness, daughter of John Harkness & Martha Jane Hooten Harkness from Henry Co., GA.

Alexander H. & Mary L. Penn Campbell lived in Paulding Co., GA. Alexander was a Lieutenant & was killed in the Civil War. Sometime during the 1890's, Alexander's son (C. C. Campbell) moved to Chattooga Co., GA. In Chattooga Co. my grand father, Will Campbell, met & married my maternal grandmother Elmina M. Scoggin.

Elimina Scoggin was the daughter of William Wiley Scoggin & Susanna Bagwell. Willaim Wiley's father was Levi S. Scoggin and Willaim Wiley's mother was Matilda Stewart. Susanna Bagwell was the daughter of Berry Bagwell & Elmina Ware.
