Notes for John Gaskins:
[1] He moved to Georgia with his parents as a child, and grew up in Telfair County.
[2] 1837-1839 ... Justice of the Peace of the 748th Dist. of Telfair County, Georgia.
[3] Domestic differences caused a separation and the 1850 census showed that John and Frances were living apart. Francis Lott Gaskins reared the children to maturity. John lived with his parents until their death, and lost his eyesight about 1855 through some accident. His last years were spent at the Kirkland Station on the old B & W Railroad, where he operated the railroad water pump.
[4] John served in the Indian War in Capt. N. J. Holton's Company of Appling County, 09 June - 19 August 1838.
[5] He had a common-law wife, Mary Tanner.
[6] John and Mary Tanner were indicted for adultery at the Oct. Term 1869 of Coffee Co., Ga., but the indictment was null-processed by reason of being defective, as shown by Court Minutes.
[7] John died at Kirkland Station 13 Sept. 1886; he had lived there his last 15 - 16 years. His legal wife, Frances, spent her last years with their daughter, Mrs. Mary (R.S.) Smith, near Lone Hill Methodist Church, [West Green] Coffee Co., Ga., and died in the Smith home.
