Notes for Bessie: I remember, as a boy of ten or so, uncle george came for a visit with his wife "bessie" and I believe two children. She contracted Impetigo [ Ring worm] from the salt water, while clamming, and treated it by applying liquid shoe polish to the sores she talked strangley and the family called her a hill billy.
In the family when there was discussion children (me) were not supposed to listen or repeat what they heard. This visit took place during the early 1930's in the deep depression and it stands out in my memory that he had hopes of a job at a manufacturer in Providence ,Brown and Sharpe I think, no job seemed to materialize.Everybody was broke or struggling for survival and 4 (four) more people to feed and house ( they were in addition to auntie Flo-Flo(Florine Malcolm) and Alice her daughter, and Grand- ma Batchelder .
Bessie,it seems, was home sick and wanted to get back to OHIO, There were tearful good-bys and they hit the road .
I don't recall hearing of them again until the telegram arrived at auntie flo-flo's home in Providence, after which she some how got to warwick to break the news (we had no phone). It seens that he was struck by a train and killed.
There is something in my memory about raising money for his funeral I don't know how it was accomplished.
