10. Whittecar/Casey/Simpkins Families, Cornelia P. Casey, 28 yrs old, born in NY appears in the 1850 census in Milo, Yates Co, NY. (This is the same county her father & uncle were living in the 1835 New York State Census.) Cornelia is living with Levi & Laretta Dunning & their family. Levi is a goldsmith. Cornelia appears on page 183. On page 182 is a Sheldon Smith, 27 yrs old (maybe 24, it's hard to read), born in NY. He is living in a boarding house & working as a grocer merchant. Sheldon appears on the Tax & Assessment Rolls of Penn Yan Village, Yates, NY in 1850 & 1852. In 1850, his personal worth was reported to be $200. In 1852, his personal estate had grown to $500 & he was assessed 88 cents. Cornelia's husband, Sheldon Smith, is listed in the 1865 Kansas St. Census, living in Leavenworth, Ward 351. In 1868, when Cornelia sells her share of land inherited from her father in Michigan, she is listed as Cornelia P. Smith of Leavenworth, State of Kansas. Cornelia & Sheldon Smith are listed in the 1870 Census in Leavenworth, Leavenworth, KS on page 378. He is a bookkeeper. According to a register of voters in Chicago, ILL in 1892, Sheldon moved to the Chicago area around 1872. In 1880, Cornelia & Sheldon are living with their daughter Emma, & her husband William Merigold in Chicago, Cook, ILL. Sheldon appears in the Evanston, ILL directory for the year 1890. He is working in insurance for Royal Insurance in a building in Rogers Park, ILL. He also appears (with a note of wife Cornelia) in Evanston, ILL with the same information. In both, there is a notation that they reside on the south side of Linden Ave. According to Chicago's voter register in 1892, Cornelia & Sheldon had been living in their current precinct for a year. Their address was somethiing like 2519 Indiana Ave. In 1900, Cornelia & Sheldon are living in San Jose Twp in Los Angeles Co, ILL. Sheldon is a book keeper. 6 families earlier on the census is their son Arthur's family. Cornelia reports that she is the mot.

60. In 1880, William's last name is recorded "Meirrgold". He is working in real estate. William is reported to have been born in Canada, with his father born in Nova Scotia & his mother in New York. It is noted in the 1900 census that William is from Canada (Eng.). At that time he had been living in the US for 40 years & had been naturalized. He was still working in real estate & owned his home free of a mortgage. William probably died before 1920, when his wife Emma was enumerated in the census as a widow.
