I have been researching my family for about 5 years now, and have found quite an extensive amount of information, but of course there is even more out there somewhere that I haven't been able to find yet. I am concentrating on the Mertink name mostly, and a few other names such as Jakobik, Dunk, Najorka, Bohot, Kubitz,Schatte, and Schulze. My family is Wendish, thus they lived in East Germany in small villages around the towns of Cottbus and Bautzen. Some of the villages are Thomaswalde, Wunscha, Weigersdorf, Reichwalde, Muskau, Zerre, Spremberg, and Spreewitz. The majority of the family emigrated to Texas in 1854 with about 600 other Wends. After arriving in Texas the Wends made their home in Serbin, Texas, near Giddings. Eventually some members of the community would move off to different areas of Texas and start German-Wendish communities of their own such as Warda, Lincoln, Walburg, The Grove, and Vernon. I am looking for any information on these families that may have lived in any of these areas
