From "A SKETCH OF FAMILY HISTORY BY ISAAC LINSAY MESSMORE III, FEB 1, 1917."

My Great Grandfather John Messmore was born in Basle Switzerland in 1733. His father was a silk weaver and was reputed to be the owner of a considerable amount of property. There were two children.
John left home at an early age to escape military duty and came to America.--landed in Virginia ( incorrect-he landed in Philidelipha in 1746-rwm)About this time Gen George Washington was organizing an army to cross the mountains to engage in the French and Indian Wars. He joined this army as a teamster and came west with him and then remained in Fayette County Penna. He married Susan Wise. I do not know anything about her ancestry. They settled on Brown's Run in German Township and bought what is known then as the Shannon land where the present Post Office and Railroad sation is including a large acreage. The title to his land proved to be defective and he walked to Philadephia to defend it and he lived there until he died January 14, 1813. His wife Susan having died October 10 1811. They are buried on his own land on the hill above the road, north of the Post Office and nearly opposite the brick house formerly the home of Joseph Haught. This is an old family buring ground with nothing to mark the graves of anyone in it. I do not know who all is buried there. There is not even a fence around it now. My Great Grandfather's sister married a man named--Teets and nothing more is known of her. She died without leaving any children. John Messmore raised a family of twelve children, nine boys and three girls. Abraham went to Canada and settled somewhere near Montreal. I frequently hear of Messmores in Canada but never met any of them. Jacob married Naomi Sutton and moved to Ohio. John moved to Fayette Co, Ohio (incorrect-moved to Licking Co, Oh. rwm) David to Indiana, Adam and George to Wayne Co, Oh. Joseph, Solomon and Isaac remained in German Twp and are buried in Lickeys Graveyard near Mc Clellandtown, Pa. Susan married George Poundstone and lived in German Township. Katherine married-Whitehill and Elizabeth married William Nolan and moved to Wayne Co. Ohio. George was the youngest and last one to die.

From "History of the Messmore Family" by George Messmore, Shreve Oh, Apr 13, 1877

A history of the Messmores as stated by George Messmore. The said George Messmore was a son of John Messmore of Fayette Co Pennsyvania and the said John Messmore was born in Switzerland about 8 or 9 miless from Basel in the year 1733 and left Switzerland in the year 1749. His father John Messmore died when the said John Messmore was six years of age and left a wife and two children.
The said John and his sister Sally and the sister married a man by the name of John Leater and she died without any children. The said George Messmore is not positive that his grandfather's given name was John. The said John Messmore came to America in the year 1749 and the said John Messmore further said that there was erected a stone house on the farm of his father and also a vineyard and his father was a silk weaver. And the said John Messmore further said his mother fit him with a belt around him and money in the belt and started him to America to keep him out of the army and that he was to go back to Switzerland as soon as the war was over but never went back and never got any of his fathers property. And the said John Messmore after in America married a girl by the name of Susana Wise of the state of Maryland on Patterson's Creek not far from Maryland and the said John Messmore died in 1813. This is the true statement as the said John Messmore made to George Messmore his son and taken down by Harvey R. Messmore a grandson of the said Messmore and also a son of George Messmore.
